wpg in a 10 gal

Typically I try to piece part my set ups instead of buying kits. I mean every time I see a kit I tend to think in terms of I can just replace such and such later and end up spending more money anyway. Right now I'm starting my own 10g set up and I'm using the 15w flourescent hood myself. Right now it seems to be doing a decent job in a low light set up. Now if I did need more lighting my plan was to buy a 2 x 13 cf kit from ahsupply.com and building a diy wooden light fixture that I could paint to match. That way if I flub up I'll still have my 15w fixture as a back up.

quick edit:
Forgot to mention that you could try hitting garage sales on a weekend. Usually there is someone getting rid of a little used aquarium set up.

that is a lot more money than you have to spend. To put that in retrospect, I'm about to pay $150 for a 198watt metal halide system.

You can get stuff for a lot less there.

hoods are expensive- don't get one

just get a hinged glass top and then put a light fixture on top of it

i'll find a link to the sort of lamp i'm talking about

here's a link (i've seen them cheaper by the way)coalife
you can't tell from the picture but the fixture is only an inch high and about 3-4 wide so it's really sleek on top of the tank

it has little pull out "rack" on both sides so it fits perfectly on the lip of the tank. i really like mine.

Hey, Kyle, you wouldn't happen to have any pictures of your tank with that fixture on it, do you? That sounds like a good idea, but I've never seen anything set up like that before.

The watts per gallon rule does not apply to smaller tanks as well as extremely bigger tanks.

You can go ahsupply.com and buy their kit of 2*13watts. It is easy to mount and gives you the necessary light for what you want to do.

Cheers,
Pedro

thanks all, i certainly have lost of things to ponder.
id like to see any pics of their ides if nayone had them.
thanks.

Not good for planted tanks. Its a 50/50 bulb which means 50% 10000K and 50% actinic. Actinic light is not utilized by plants which means its basically wasted. (some people claim that algae is able to utilize it though - so this might create additional problems).
