I had the same problem with my dual overflow and my local pet store told me to remove all 90 degree fitting and to never go over 45. They also said by using ribbed hose that is sold with the over flow I would move more water due to less restriction in the pvc fitting. I took their advise and bought the two hoses and now have no problems with the return it is even quiter no more grugling. I am running a Gen X40.
