I'm just not sure where you got that mystery snails don't have breathing siphons? (we call them snail snorkels : o)

I got the impression from our LFS and the post links from earlier in this thread that only apple snails had it... my bad.

I read that mystery snails do have syphons. I also read the they DO NOT get that big. That has to be an apple snail. Still cool though!

Apple...mystery...it's just a common name. You'll hear P. diffusa/bridgesii called both.

That being said, based on size and the plant eating it could very well be P. canaliculata but I'm not an expert on snail ID.

Regardless, both species have siphons...

Maybe it's perspective, but that snail doesn't seem THAT big. I have mystery snails that large, if not larger.

Good to know. Here is my current problem,

I am guessing they hitched a ride on the plants I bought.

To prove my snails size here it is against a Mexican beach pebble rock. Roughly 3" long.

That is a common mystery snail.

It is a big mystery snail.

I have two blue's that are that size or very close. If you got it from Petsmart, it's a mystery snail.

Mystery snails are a type of apple snail but not the ones you saw in those links given to you. Giant apple snails get way larger than what you have now.

If that snail you have is eating healthy plants... he is STARVING.

What do you feed it? If you say he just eats algae and left over fish food, he is starving. They need pellets or wafers to supplement their diet. Fresh kale and cucumber is good for them too to provide extra calcium.
