help sexing dempseys

THANKS MARK. BOUGHT HIKARI MICRO PELLETS COUPLE OF DAYS AGO.... THEY DONT SEEM INTERESTED IN THEM. IN FACT I HAVENT WITNESSED THEM EATING ANYTHING AT ALL. JUST COUNTED AND DOWN TO 20 MAYBE A LITTLE MORE. WHEN I SAID I WASNT WORRIED ABOUT HOW MANY I ENDED UP WITH I GUESS I LIED... THIS IS BEGINNING TO REALLY UPSET ME. JUST LOOKED UP ANOTHER PET STORE LITTLE FURTHER AWAY GONNA TRY IT BECAUSE IVE BEEN GETTING REALLY BAD ADVICE FROM PET****T. NOT ONLY WITH FISH BUT BOUGHT MY SON TWO HERMIT CRABS FROM THEM TWO DAYS AGO AND THEY INSTRUCTED ME TO BUY THINGS I DIDNT NEED AND FAILED TO LET ME KNOW OF THING I HAD TO HAVE. (WHEN WILL I LEARN TO DO MY RESEARCH FIRST?) SO GOING TO TRY ANOTHER STORE TODAY. BUT STILL OPEN TO ANY ADVICE U ALL CAN GIVE. ANOTHER QUESTION.... MAYBE DAD IS EATING THEM TOO? HAVENT WITNESSED THIS MYSELF BUT MY SON SAID HE DID. CAN I PUT HIM IN WITH MOM IN THE 20 GALLON? THEY ARE ONLY 4" MOM IS A LITTLE SMALLER THAN THAT. I KNOW ITS NOT A GOOD FINAL HOME BUT JUST FOR NOW?

Why not move the fry to the smaller tank and put the parrents back in the main tank?

JD?

well i noticed in the last couple of days that the number was shrinking quickly so last night i watched for quite a while and noticed that mom is nolonger relocating the strays but eating them. i remembered i had a spare 20 gallon in storage so going to start cycling the tank today and remove mom. got a few better pics of them last night while investigating.

sunshine i have to say i have never seen a jack dempsey that looks like that

pretty sure she is a jd. will take another pic of her later (boyfriends in nashville with my cam) she is colored up again now that she is in the 20 by herself. so went on a wild goose chase looking for another pet store (thanks google maps :mad2:) ran out of time gonna try another one tomorrow. miss indy where i know where everything is!

ONLY SEE ONE BABY LEFT.... SO UPSETTING. GUESS IM GOING TO TAKE THE GRAVEL OUT AND JUST STICK TO SAND. I HAVE REMOVED SOME FLOATERS BUT NOT AS MANY THAT HAS DISSAPEARED. SO THINKING MOM AND DAD WERE EATING THEM. THINK NEXT TIME IM GOING TO MOVE MOM AND DAD AS SOON AS THEY ARE FREE SWIMMING. SO DISSAPOINTING...

I would either move the fry only... Or leave them with both parents ;)

Also... Better than brine is good.. But I can get the same stuff... Different name for cheaper... ANyway... I feed mine that . And you can tell they are eating it... Usually with Dempseys you really don;t have to worry much as most I have had fed of the parents bodies..... Still... Feeding is better than this for one reason. The parents health.

That's a very pretty female JD in full breeding color. She's definitely a JD.

VERY NICE FEMALE TONGUE! WELL NO BABIES LEFT. SO TODAY I TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE ALMOST EMPTY TANK AND REPLACED MOST OF THE GRAVEL WITH SAND. NEXT TIME (IF THERE IS A NEXT TIME) I PLAN TO FEED THE HIKARI FIRST BITES AND REMOVE THEM AT 1/4 OF AN INCH AS THIS IS WHEN I STARTED NOTICING THEM DISAPPEARING. ANY THOUGHTS OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. I REALLY WANT TO BE BETTER PREPARED NEXT TIME I FEEL HORRIBLE ABOUT THE WHOLE SITUATION. WHEN SHOULD I PUT MOMMA BACK IN WITH DAD? ANYTHING I SHOULD DO DIFFERENTLY? THANKS TO ALL FOR THE ADVICE!

Don't beat yourself up about it. Its not uncommon for first spawns to fail. The pair has to learn just like all parents do. There's a good chance that the next spawning will go off without a hitch. I have four pairs that take care of the fry until the next batch of eggs hatch.
