Convict and Firemouth just spawned (pictures)

Very cool! I would be interested in a few, but you would have to figure out shipping, though I would pay for it. Probably never gonna happen, but hey, why burn my bridges? I have to say, if they come out looking like the female with the father's gill coloring... well, that will be a wow moment I bet!

Just a quick update on my firemouth/convict hybrids. This picture is just after feeding time. As you can see if you click on the thumbnail and zoom in, the eyes are getting much larger and striped patterns are starting to emerge from some of them.

Id give you guys more update and/or pictures, but the Fry can only grow so quick :) Ill post more pictures step by step as they get larger.

If anyone has any tips on how to take some clear shots of the Fry that would be great. I took several pictures, but I guess im just not a good photographer.

Thanks again, ill keep you guys updated a long the way with pictures as they get older.

Just a quick non fry update. Its been a month and 5 days since I started this thread. My Convict/Firemouth pair have spawned 3 times in about 36 days. Here's a picture of the 3rd clutch of eggs that were just laid.

Jeeze, I kind of wished they would stop spawning so often. When I bought a firemouth and convict I didn't expect a clutch of eggs almost every week.

PS: Im still taking care of the first batch of fry from when I first started this thread. Ill post more pictures of them once they develop a little more.

This is a very interesting thread but please please please do not sell these fish! Even though you are getting offers to buy here (and they should know better) it is not something that is good for the aquarium hobby as a whole. The reason many of us (as aquarists) keep from buying hybrids is because we know that they would not happen in nature and there is a reason for that. It is alright for you to breed two different species (as long as they are willing) but either keep the fish for yourself or use them as live food for YOUR fish. Even selling them as live fish food is not a good idea as you will come across people who buy them to keep. Just look at how many people buy feeder goldfish to put in their tanks. Please do not sell these fish.

On another note, they are very cute and I look forward to seeing how they develop.

Also for getting clear pics try this:

-Turn off all the lights in the room except the tank light.
-Set your camera to macro if you can, otherwise just turn off the flash.
-Put the lens up to the tank and push (gently) it against the tank so that is flush with the glass.
-Focus and take a pic.

Hey thanks for the advice, ill definitely try it out next time I take the pictures.

As for selling these fish, it's not going to happen. This is my first time going through with it and im just doing it to see what they're going to turn out like. This breeding thing was never planned or anything, I never thought it would happen when I purchased the fish. I had no idea my Firemouth was even male till all this started happening. After I manage to see how this batch of fry will turn out, I will most likely separate the Convict and Firemouth to stop the constant spawning, because it's a pain in the butt more than anything. I have to keep dispatching of the eggs, and sometimes I feel like a real jerk doing it lol. Not only that, but my main tank becomes pretty chaotic when eggs or fry are present. The Convict gets really aggressive and the Firemouth takes most the beating.

Depending on how this batch of fry turn out, ill probably end up wanting to keep 3 or 4 of the hybrids till adult hood just to see what they'll turn out like. Right now the fry are in a fry cage sitting in a spare 10 gallon tank that houses a school of tetras. As the fry get larger, ill start releasing them into a spare tank that I already have waiting for them. Im afraid they're still small enough to get sucked up into a filter.

Sunday July 10th update on the hybrid Firemouth/Convict fry. Still in the fry cage. Trying to figure out this photography thing, but I think I got a couple decent shots of details of the fry.
Seems like the clearest pictures are the ones where I used the flash, but the fry go nuts when they see that flash. I hope im not turning them blind

This is good to hear! I too would like to see what they look like as adults. No doubt you'd have a unique tank! They look good so far, nice and plump!

They are cute little buggers. Keep us posted as they grow, should be interesting.
