    Chinese algae eaters

Don’t assume your CAE will live only off algae. Feed him veggies, algae wafers and other sinking food. Mine also adores shrimp pellets and frozen brine shrimp and to a lesser degree, blood worms. I know I’m in the minority (or maybe the only-ity), but I like my CAE, he has been a great fish...

    Chinese algae eaters

CAE's have sucker mouths and their stripe isn't so distinct. That pic looks like a Siamese algae eater. Site on telling them apart http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Algae-Eaters/ Good pic of a CAE here: http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_Gyrinocheilus_aymonieri.php

Picture (drawing) of male/female guppies but it would be the same for your fish - look for the gonopodium to identify the males: http://www.showguppies.com/helpline.htm "Real" picture of a gonopodium on a male: http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Livebe6.jpg

Read the Ich article here is my plan to fight it.

I wouldn't add less than your planned 48 tsp. The article says 1-3 tsp per gallon, better to be a bit over 1 than take the chance of not having enough. I would aim more for the 2 tsp per gallon, but that's just personal preference and what I've used in my quarantine tanks in the past.

    Brine shrimp cubes

Your method is fine. There’s lots of different ways. It just comes down to personal preference. I have a little plastic dish I thaw mine in. I've defrosted a cube alone (floating plastic cup in hot water) and saw all the dank red liquid that resulted. It’s probably a drop in the bucket...

Ich: Is this a good plan?

I just want to confirm – you had these fish for 9 months with no health problems prior? Any previous case of ich in this tank? Or, were the fish ever flashing before? Even if the fish was stressed, ich would not spontaneously appear if there has never before been any sign of it. The idea...

    ?? Cycle Question

If your water supply has chloramines, then sitting the water out won't help with that. 20 for nitrates is a good target reading. They won't go awfully higher by Saturday, I wouldn't even worry about them for the few days. Maybe go lighter on the feedings, anyway. Just keep an eye on the...

    Planaria or nematode?

Planaria crawl on surfaces. Nematodes swim frantically in an S-shape in the water.

power outages and blown filter motors

Get something long and thin, like a chopstick or shish kabob stick (I've used a crochet hook). Stick it into the open section beside where the tube fits into the motor chamber (where it slides back and forth to regulate flow). Usually that gets it going again. Usually when this happens, it...

    white lint

Welcome. Not enough info. Size and shape of the things (dots, dashes, fat, skinny)? It can also help to buy yourself a magnifying glass to look in the tank with. Are these things on surfaces or in the water column? Are they moving in the current or actually on their own? If on their own...

    Do Cory's tolerate salt?

Corys will tolerate salt just fine short term - i.e. 2-3 weeks for ich treatment. There is no reason to keep salt in your tank all the time. There are many, many threads about that if you search, but here is just one: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77243&highlight=salt

    Florish exel and water wisteria

I don't have water wisteria (hygro difformis) but I have other hygophilas and they are not affected by Excel nor Flourish. What size bottle of Excel are you using? Quoting from the following thread re erroneous label instructions. Perhaps your cap is a 10 mL one and therefore you are...

    Versa Top

I have a versa top for my 29 gallon. I don't know about how the all glass hood fits on it - I just have shop lights over. Yes, there's a small outsy bit on the top (not so clear in the first pic), I could never figure out what it was there for. Now I know. Pics:

Trying to net Chinese Algae Eaters!!

They like caves. Set up a PVC cave for him. When he is out, chase him and when it goes in its cave let it be, it will learn this is its refuge. When it thinks it is safe in the cave, that time you chase him, quickly put a net over one opening and your hand over the other and lift the whole...

    Powerhead recommendation

I agree on all points above. However, there are instances when that isn’t feasible – planted tank (don’t want the surface disruption), bigger tank (won’t fit over the rim) or tank position (not enough room from tank to wall if it was originally positioned for only a canister). In those cases...

How to clean scum out of tank?

Get one of your aquarium-only cloths. Wet. Sprinkle a good amount of table salt (fine) and make sure the salt is wet. Not so it scratches but acts as an abrasive. Then lotsa elbow grease. You might even try the wetting with vinegar as opposed to water. Once the salt dissolves, you have to...

    floating plants

My concern with fishing line is if you have corys in the tank. The way they zip up for air, it would worry me that they'd zip right into the fishing line.

    floating plants

I've done the same as Wishful, but I used thicker tubing. It works but after a water change, for me it was always a pain to herd the plants back inside the corral.
