The 'bugs' I have heard of that you are likely to get in an aquarium are harmless, but it would be hard to ID what you have from the description.

I don't think they really dig down into the substrate, more just snuffle around on the surface of it; although I've only kept them on gravel, so maybe it's because they they can't dig into that.

Thanks 247, so it sounds like they are very different. I've looked at this old thread (among others), which does refer to the idea of cat litter made from laterite (although inconclusively). btw I know nothing about geology.
