I've seen nice purple coralline algae go green if it doesn't get the right lighting, don't ask me why, but I have seen it. My lfs sells live rock under no real lighting and it's got alot of green coralline, after a while in my tank it goes back to pink and purple though.
I'm also upgrading my 75 gallon from 260w pc's to 760w pc's and halides. My lights are also on legs and I don't really know how to safely elevate them. I'll let you know if I come up with anything, please do the same here.
There's about 14 or 15 inches of water deep. 2x150's isn't an option, I already bought a light strip with 250's and it's not a retrofit kit or anything.
I'll have to devise a way to elevate the new lights. My tank is in my wall, I actually had to cut some sheetrock back just to accomdate the new lights. Hopefully I can put some blocks under the legs of the new lights to jack them up a bit.
Thanks, I've always run with an open top (wow that sounds bad) and I'm already used to the evaporation. I live in upstate NY so we never get too too hot up here, my house is usually below 75 degrees even on the really hot days. I guess my concern now is the distance between the tank and the...
Hello, I recently upgraded my 75 gallon with better lights. I'm going from 260w power compacts to 760w power compacts and halides. Anyone have experience with this much light in a tank this size? I've already begun moving my coral lower in the tank, and I plan to short cycle the new lights when...
My green brain has been staying closed for about 2 or 3 weeks now. I had put some ricordia right next to it, and thought that could be the cause, but I moved the ricordia and it's still not opening. The only changes to my tank have been temperature, usually around 79-80, have dipped to around...
Coralline algae, it's usually pink and purple, but mine is occasionally green too. It's good stuff, most people have it everywhere in their tanks. You will need to scrape it off the front of the tank though, which can be difficult. Sea urchin's are known to eat this stuff, but they also promote...
Sounds like your feeding way too much. You should enough so that your fish eats it all in a short period of time. Don't worry too much about underfeeding. Many people stock hermit crans and snails as scavengers. I do, and I also have sea cucumbers and stars.
If you have no plans for coral, find out what type of bulbs your current tank accepts. I would get 1 actinic bulb and 1 10k bulb. Your current tank probably accepts normal output flourescent bulbs?
What are you planning on keeping in you tank? You can keep mushrooms and a few other low light corals with nothing more than normal output flourescent bulbs. If you plan to keep other coral, you will want to get power compact lighting in my opinion.
How old are your bulbs? I've heard of many tanks that do great even with considerable amounts of phosphates, but as soon as the spectrum of the bulbs weaken, the cyano is triggered. Some people schedule their bulb changing based on cyano growth.
So you are going to try to take an empty 55 gallon tank, and surprise him with a saltwater setup. You know it takes approx 6 weeks before any fish can safely be added.
