1st REAL planted tank (10g) log! (Picture heavy)

Funny I was just messing with my 10g & planning another 10g actually. :)

The light is an incandescent light fixture that works great for tanks like this. I had this one lying around but you can find them at pet stores, I have heard even at Walmart. It is just a light fixture with 2 screw in sockets that I put CF bulbs in. Check reptile sections too.

Once you get more light & your plants grow in it will be easier to hide things. Any pictures?

I have some AHsupply lights on my 72g and they are very nice but not needed on a little 10g. I would definitely say try to find an incandescent fixture OR you can add another standard strip for another 15watts but that really limits space on top of the tank.

I took a couple pictures earlier today. Tomorrow is water change day so the water is quite amber! Not much has changed! :) I am also not adding any ferts or co2 at this time but that will change within the week. I also added a photo of my berried RCS! (which my anubias looks awesome in!)

That's a nice low-light 10g you have. Some Glowlight Tetras would look good in there.

Thanks! I think you are right but I am not adding any fish till the shrimp population is booming & there are more plants for the baby shrimp to hide in. It is a shrimp tank after all. :) Once I do had fish it will be something like glowlights though.

BTW love the avatar! :)

I remember reading that ferts were harmful to shrimp in the long run, now I have to go dig up where I found that article...can anyone confirm or deny on that?

I'm lookin at the moss wall you have and it seems to be progressing quite nicely, I guess I'm in for a similar wait for my wall to fill in hehe

Just recently I found out more info on ferts & shrimp (was mis-informed at first). Copper in the ferts is the problem with shrimp so you just have to watch for that. From my understanding there is a very minimal amount in flourish but as long as you are dosing lightly & keeping up with water changes it should not be a problem at all. I have read about many people using ferts in a shrimp tank and have not had any problems.

The moss grows very slow but that is normal. Give it some time and it will start poking through. :thm:

Here is a mini update...Well, I just wanted to share some pictures really! :grinyes:

My shrimp population is slowing declining so no ferts have been added yet except some pieces of root tab SO very little growth still. The root tabs have helped the dwarf sag though, which I was going to remove.

I added a bronze crypt to the back. It is small now but it'll grow! :)

I have a very small piece of Christmas moss tied down. This will one day make a carpet...someday.

This is my new flame moss which I have not decided where it is going yet. Right now it seems quite happy to be so close to the light. (you can see something new in the background too!)

My only female RCS left.

My momma Apple snail! She just laid some eggs recently but sadly they will not be fertile.

Anubias (nana I am pretty sure anyways) is doing well except for the new hard to remove brown algae! :mad2: But it finally has a flower popping up!! I couldn't get good photos though. (I need to put those ferts INTO the tank not just behind it! :) )

Crazy roots!!

Java ferns seem healthly but I keep losing 1 leaf at a time. You can just see the crypt poking up back there too.

The moss wall is growing but not filling in....

Just a ramshorn hanging behind the wall.

That's it folks! I will mess with the tank more once I get more shrimp & ferts going. Thanks for looking, any comments welcomed!

Nice Setup!
Thank you!

Nice progress Jen.
Tank is looking good
For the moss wall did you chop up the moss into pieces or laid down long strands of it?
Thanks. No one said anything about chopping it into pieces! :shakehead:
I was thinking about doing that actually. The bottom has gone all brown too (it was the top at one point, I spun it to try to keep the growth even). I figure what could it hurt!? I will take some of that new growth to fill in the gaps and it will grow back better with some ferts added anyways.
