1st REAL planted tank (10g) log! (Picture heavy)

BK,

Strangely enough, I've found my anubias to be cleaner under higher light conditions. The leaves are growing a lot faster, so perhaps that doesn't give the algae a chance to settle on the leaves? When I had a lower WPG, the leaves were completely covered in algae.

Go figure, though. It seems like in my tank, the complete opposite of what is supposed to happen happens.

idk i see it this way. With low light plants being set at high light, the plant cannot out compete the algae so algae wins and can take over the plant easily. This is why the most common algae with anubias and high light is green spot/bba. But then again i guess co2 and phosphate levels could also play a big role in this..

Thanks guys

Anubias are just great! :) You have to remember in my tank I have awesome algae cleaners too. My shrimp had all the nasty algae off the plants within 24hrs!! Now I am not sure how much they get to eat because I never see any algae to be able to see it disappear, if that makes sense. They get supplement food of course too.
Yee shrimps are lil algae munchers. 2 bad i cant get any to clean up my anubias, the angels would make desert of them in a few seconds.

I have the same situation with the algae and angels except I don't have high lighting.

Q

I have the same issue with my 55 african tank (sigh)

Yes me too. I just moved it there quickly when I changed the cover over to a glass top. The only things going in or out of the tank now is the airline for the filter and cord for the heater so I just have them both coming out of the corner.

Thanks for pointing that out. I will go move it now.

Update with questions

My anubias has had 3 new leaves in the past 3 weeks! That is pretty good for such a slow grower (in my conditions) right? The Java ferns have had a couple yellow leaves which I removed, always on the front plants and the moss is slowly moving along.

I can't say too much for anything else in the tank though. I had a couple shrimp die off for unknown reasons, one of which was due to pop out some babies. The dwarf sag loses a blade every now and then and the tropica plant....

How'd he get there!? :)

There is a lot of new growth though, at least 8 new leaves and crazy roots/runners.

There is only 8 shrimp in the tanks now and a bunch of MTS, baby apple snails & a few baby ramshorns. Is it possible that the plants are not getting enough wastes/ferts?

I do find it interesting that on all the plants that are having any issues it is 1 "leaf" at a time, the whole plant does not seem to suffer.

what kind of light hood is that? I've been having the hardest time trying to find a hood that will hold two bulbs for my 10g and you have exactly what I'm looking for! (are those are compact fluorescent bulbs?)

I also noticed that you hid the heater pretty darn well with your driftwood, nice touch! My DW is too small to hide my heater and I'm kinda struggling with ways to cover up the filter/heater with plants.

I should also note that my tank is almost a clone of yours hehe: moss wall on one side, RCS, MTS, lightly planted, although my plants could use some more light, which is why I'm asking about your hood. I know AH supply sells retrofit light kits but great googly moogly I don't have that much cash to drop on lighting for such a lightly planted tank =/

Help a fellow shrimp-keeper out?
