29G Shrimp Tank

Thanks! The marimo balls wander a bit because they're under the filter spill, and the BNs rearrange the tank at times.

LOL! That wisteria had absolutely no reaction to getting yanked out of its old tank and transplanted into mine. I kept it kinda thick to provide cover for the shrimp and any gambusia babies - but the shrimp actively roam the entire tank.

So, Jen, any planting today or are you resting after your road trip? You've left us hanging! Will you tie or glue mosses (eek, &/or the bucie) to the wood? What about those "temporary" plants? We want to see!

Kannan Fodder Kannan Fodder : I like your skull & moss balls too! & wisteria is just like that often but not always for me.

Most of my day was consumed by my on going water problem so plants took a back seat. But got a little work done, mostly wanted to get the crypts in ASAP.

  • Lowered the front piece of wood but a bunch of the spiky pieces fell down and wouldn't stay up on their own. They will all get attached when I pull the wood out to tie moss on.
  • Moved the HOB to the left to get an idea of how the flow will affect the plants. It was helpful, I know I need to attach the java fern to the left of the upward stick as well as the middle area to help balance it out when it is pushed by the current.
  • I know I want the Buce on the curvy piece of wood to the left of the java fern. It likes decent light and high flow, that's the best spot I can give it.
  • The crypts have been growing for years and stayed short so I decided to put them up front (glad I put some extra substrate in!).
  • I think the anubias is in the shadiest spot but a far corner might be even better?
  • I have that one stem of unknown plant that will go in the back somewhere on the left side, want to keep the right side low.
Oh, you wanted pictures? ;) Just remember it is still under construction!

Let's hope tomorrow is more fruitful. Although today was a big step towards fixing the water issue. Hopefully tomorrow it will be fixed!

Posting while I am again! lol I will tie the mosses and the temporary plant will probably float. Only temp plant I have so far is the guppy grass, which I hate for scaping but as long as it does it's job we're fine. ;) I need more plants. Coming up dry in my searches, unless I want to pay for shipping from 6 different people for one plant each. :(

Ugh, & it's cold where you are, not the best for plant shipping. I'd just wait for everything you want in there to fill in & skip the "temps". You know the patience game.

So, if that's long (or tall, whatever) java fern, you may want to have it lower in the tank. I "had" some that was 10-12" but grown w/co2. I like the anubias where it is but I'm missing more wood! Hopefully you get the water issues addressed, & moss more wood. I'm a "tie-er" too, bought super glue gel but haven't done it yet.

Do you know what crypts those are? You might spread them along the front more, they'll spread if happy (roots tabs? I vote yes).

What's the floating plant, an anubias? Or the buce? or... what?

Well the temps are intended to keep algae in check. Everyone says "planted heavy to start." Especially with all these slow growers, you want something that doesn't need time to adjust or get established that will start growing off the bat.

I made that little pocket just for the fern though. :/ It is a bit too tall but it will look pretty in the flow I think. Plus it will probably lose most of those leaves before it finishes adjusting, that's what all my others do. Missing more wood? I like the idea of glue for tiny things that are hard to tie or things attached to rocks. I don't want to put glue on my wood is really why I am tying. ;)

Maybe wendtii, Rachel didn't know. They have great color though and stay small, those were full grown. I thought about spreading them across the whole front but figured I might want more than one foreground plant. But I'm really considering just lining the front with them now.... Maybe just some taller crypts on that side in the front, cause the wood is quite high on the left, Root tabs, yes! Floater is the Buce.

I do like all your suggestions though! Where do you think I should put the bright green tissue sample moss? Oh and the subwassertang? I am thinking I might like flame moss on this arch. A piece fell down in front of it, grr.

Now that's IF I can find some at a reasonable price and time frame. Oh BTW that flat rock on the left was just for filling deflection. But I might attached the subwassertang to some rocks like that for the left side foreground...??

Most of my time has been stolen by other things/people these past couple a days so little has been done with the tank but here's an update anyways.

  • Water problem is still a problem. Need to upgrade some equipment which should not have to be done and I'm not pleased about it.
  • Yesterday I started dosing the line of flourish ferts, since I have them.
  • Crypts perked up the morning after planting them (before ferts or root tabs even). Decided to leave them where they are and put Osmocote+ root tabs under them today.
  • Ordered some more mosses. Decided to wait for that moss before pulling the wood out.
  • Got a semi-concrete plan for where I plan to put each moss!
  • A few of the low grade RCS are saddled. Discovered I have female and male Sakura so I MIGHT separate them to keep that line going good...but then what do I do with the low grades?
  • My filter pipes are ready for use but I am using that filter on the holding tank. lol I have no impellers/shafts for my other 2213s so gonna preform a swap to a HOB for the holding tank.
  • Not a lot of algae in the holding tank for the shrimp and snails so I grabbed a thoroughly algae covered rock from the pond for them. They LOVED it!

I love how inverts act when there are no fish in the tank! I have had MTS in this tank the entire time I had fish in it and never saw them out like this.

Who's a happy snail? Oh, you can see a shrimp in the background too, not clear at all but bright red!

And just for everyone's piece of mind the habrosus' are doing great! Got a head count of 11 in the 72g which I thought was impressive in the big space. lol They don't school much though. :(

Nice pics! I can almost see the smiles on the shrimp ;)

What mosses will you have? Fissidens is nice but very slow growing, I think I accidentally vac'd mine out :(

lol Thanks.

Fissidens is very nice, one of my favs but it only did well for me in my high tech setup so I passed on it for this tank. I got christmas, flame, that unknown tissue moss and weeping moss. I know where I want to flame and weeping but not sure about the unknown guy now, christmas will go everywhere else. ;)

I am SO excited to have inverts again, a void in my life has been filled! :D

Looking very good! LOL! I know about getting sidelined with other stuff... Been fighting off allergies and/or a cold since Sunday. Felt so bad yesterday I almost called in sick.

I used some 2lb fluorocarbon fishing line to tie my plants, but the moss is growing very fast and has already attached itself to the wood. I never considered superglue because I always assumed it was toxic to fish. If it's fish safe, that opens up all sorts of possibilities!
