I have done it a few different ways. You can take out the cartridges and literally just put some filter floss in it's place but like blue2fyre said some carbon is a good idea too.

I made my own filter too by taking one of those cd holders with the spindle that new cds come in and drilled a hole in the bottom for a powerhead to fit into & many small holes on the top for water to flow into. I filled it with filter floss & carbon, also I put a piece of panty hose over the intake of the powerhead to protect it. I actually have a picture of it some where, I'll dig it up. It did a great job and it was free!

when you mean you put carbon in the aquarium did you just put the carbon in a mesh bag and just let it float in the aquarium? sorry i am kind of new at this haha

i would be very careful...personally i would not want something that says on the label causes cancer in a tank that i know i will have my hands in frequently.

If you can't find this, try seeing if you can find a local distributor of SpectraQuartz. I picked up a 50lb bag of their coarse grade for $22 within the last couple weeks. http://www.spectraquartz.com/

I'm pretty certain the cancer warning is if you inhale it. The dust is dangerous if inhaled. I still have this stuff in my tanks and it's been fine for almost 2 years. The downside is it's been discontinued SpectraQuartz is the new alternative.

Unless he has lung fish I don't think he needs to worry about his fish getting silicosis!
