75 gallon Planted Office Tank Journal

I have alot of algae for these guys to eat!

After floating them for 1/2 hour, I dumped out most of their shipping water, and then put them in tank water to wash remaining plant, dirt, and water off.

Snails looks to be in pretty good shape, no bad smells, and I have seen 1/2 of them moving around a tiny bit so far.

Pretty.

if you can keep your tank above 6.5 mostly that's not too bad for the nerites. unfortunately there are no nerites that do real well in low ph afaik. they're salt water snails so accustomed to a higher tds/ph, but obviously can do well in fresh.

Just dropped in the snails, so I hope all is well. Check out the pics.

If any snail tries to escape I know they are not happy with the water/pH, since there is so much good grazing for them inside the tank there should be no other reason to leave.

See the red square? Inside the square is my one and only bulb from my large plant order. It is called "Dwarf Aquarium Lily" according to my layout and plant list. It is actually starting to grow! I have tried bulbs in my kids tank, and they always fail on me. So I guess I am proud this bulb has leaves that are getting bigger each day. Cool. :grinno:

Sorry for fuzzy pic.

One snail out of 10 seems to be very sick, or DOA. When I added them to the tank, my co-workers wondered why I put them all in the same spot. See, if you do this, and they are crawl away to eat and explore, you can see which sick ones are left behind. If you spread them all over the place, kind of hard to tell which ones moved. I think 9 out of 10 is pretty good.

Here is the sick one:

Some snails stayed low, some climbed high. This one is inspecting my silicone re-seal job.

My boss (who is paying for all of this), really like the snails. So I guess it was a good idea.

Please keep us informed as to how it goes with "The Wet Spot" They are about a 3 1/2 hour drive from me. It'd be about the same for shipping as it would be to drive down there. I could be up for a road trip to a good store.
TIA

Will do. From the look of it, I would say they are a very good store, but I dont know if there internet operations are seperate from their bricks-and-mortar.

Awesome! Looking good.

Thanks!

I think my plants have finally settled in after a week and a half. Growth in past two days has been amazing. I do have an algae bloom going on, but I think it is not increasing now that the plants are soaking up the nutrients. And the snails have been munching for 12 hours. I am hoping I can keep alage to a nice minimum level. I'll do a FTS after the water change later in the day.

My Krib as been real nasty to the curvicep, and even to the cherry barbs occassionally. I am being told she even head butted a snail on the front glass and knocked it off. Is she is nasty to my new fish, I may have to put her back in my kids tank. Everyone always says Kribs are peaceful except when spawning, but this female hasnt been near a male in over a year, does that matter? I think I have to rename her from "ruby" to "queen b*tch".

So yesturday the snails had a feast and were moving all over the place. Today, they are not moving. WTF? Do they need a rest, do they break between meals, or is my co2 and/or pH messing these little guys up? Maybe they prefer to clean at night? I shut off the lights for an hour to test that theory, and they have not become active.

Just paid for fish with online vendor. They will ship on Mon and be here on Tuesday...http://www.wetspottropicalfish.com/ Here is what I got to start:

Pair Apistogramma cacatuoides,1.25"
Pair Apistogramma nijsseni,1.25"+

On Friday I decided that with the Krib and a two pairs of dwarf cichlids, there was just too much chance for problems in the bottom 1/3 of the tank. I contacted the vendor "The Wet Spot" via email and asked to modify the order, which they gladly agreed to, so there is a plus for them right off the bat.

I really dont have much going on in the top 1/3 of the water, and as you may know from reading this tank journal, this was supposed to be a rainbow tank anyway. I replaced the pair of Apistogramma nijsseni with 6 x Turquois rainbows 2". I think this will be a really good decision in the long run. So that means as of Tuesday I should have:

14 x Puntius titteya (Cherry Barb)
1 female Pelvicachromis pulcher (Krib)
1 Laetacara curviceps (Dwarf Flag)
2 (pair) Apistogramma cacatuoides "Double Red" (Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid)
6 x Melanotaenia lacustris (Turquois Rainbow)

Anyone see any issues here?

According to aqadvisor.com:

Recommended temperature range: 77 - 80.6 F.
Recommended pH range: 6 - 7.5.
Recommended hardness range: 5 - 15 dH.
You have plenty of aquarium filtration capacity.
Your aquarium filtration capacity for above selected species is 183%.
Recommended water change schedule: 22% per week.
Your aquarium stocking level is 73%.

I guess we'll find out on Tuesday. :22_yikes:

Regarding my snails, I dont know if they are going to work with my pH. Their shells seem to be getting white spots/holes, and the edges seem to be eroding away. I cant tell for sure, as I may just be paranoid. Again, I guess the only thing I can do is wait and see.
