75 gallon Planted Office Tank Journal

seriously, I'm looking forward to seeing some cories (julii?) or pleco (albino longfin bristlenose!!!) in your tank someday. :D BTW, bn plecs are very good at keeping algae off your tank walls!

I am seriously considering plecos or otos. Otos seem better for several reasons. They are cheaper, smaller, prettier (maybe), and will supposedly eat algae right off the leaves, which is what I need. I dont have too much issues with algae on the glass. Thinking of try 5 of them to see what happens, but I wont have them until next week sometime probably.

i would say go for more thay can be picky and and i have had them die on me when i first get them (even with drip acclimation) as long as thay survive though thay should be good. aslong as the first batch is ok i would go with quite a few more oto's there amazing when in bigger groups.

Yeah, I just read that 1 per 10 gallon is good estimate, which would mean 7.5 for me, so 5 would be short. I will round up to 10 because like you said, I hear there unfortunately seems to be alot of die-off with the wild-caught otos in the first month, even with very careful introduction.

I already gave The Wet Spot a heads up that I need pleco or otos, but it looks like I am definately going with Otos. So in a week or so I will order 10 otos along with another 6 rainbows of some type. At that point, I will be stocked (probably), but I am sure I will toss in a few more fish.

Assuming my first fish order arrives tomorrow, there will be pics. Stay tuned folks.

Ohh, and if you didnt already see my algae pics a page back, please go there and tell me what type of algae you think I have. please and thank you.

Man you got some algae :/ on page 33 it looks like Hair, Thread, Fuzz the cause is most likely low CO2, low nutrient levels and ammonia spikes. Have you tryed dosing excel that should help kill that? Also can you boost up your co2 and you should only run 2 lights try for 5-6hours a day till the tank establishis itself.

You are correct. Tank still looks alright overall for now, but there are some real trouble areas as the pics show. I am taking a multi-faceted approach becuase I think I made a few mistakes. Of course, this means I wont be able to prove which of these things caused my algae issues, but I hope they fix the problems.

Here is what I have started:

  1. Only 1 bulb on (instead of 3) 8 hours
  2. Slighty more co2 (during day only)
  3. Added Snails
  4. Adding Otos (in 1 week)
  5. Adding GH booster at water change (started today)
  6. Adding more Fe (I dont think there is enough in CSM+B) for my reds (starting in 1 week)
  7. Manually removing some algae (cleaned rocks today for instance)
  8. I am going to keep the power head on, algae seemed to be biggest issue in dead spots (mostly the far back left of the tank)
So we'll see!

:nilly:

What do you dose weekly and how much? Also what is your water specs temp, ph, gh, kh, so on so on :). When I first started my 55 I used all 216w added a lot of ferts and co2 never had any algae once you get your ferts down your tank will look sweet.

floating your affected stems should be able to let them utilize the atmosphere and just might help them grow better to "out-compete" algae. once they seem to be doing good plant them again and see how it goes.
