If by "a few" you mean 2 or less than you're fine. Very few instances out there of keeping groups of clowns in a single tank.
So they live in schools or no?
I may go ahead and use the skimmer so I know how to work then and what not and I'm getting married June 1st so I'm sure il get money from that and I can use some of that money to get a good one.
Are there any decent sized fish for a tank my size? I know I want clowns but I want a good sized fish I always have. My buddy had this fish in there but he called it a butterfly fish and idk if he knows what he's talkin abt

Typically the way it goes when you have more then 2 clowns. Largest/most dominant one becomes female and rules the territory. The 2nd most dominant becomes male and breeds with the female. Everyone else either waits for an opening or stages an assassination. It is sort of like being a royal centuries ago. You either wait for someone to die so you can move up in rank, or you spend your free time coming up with schemes to make upwards mobility happen faster. As a result the female and male will be on the look out for anyone challenging them and they will respond to eliminate the threat. Usually you eventually end up with 2 clowns. Hence why people tell you to just start with 2 clowns.
There is a person over at ReefCentral that has somehow managed to keep 27 clowns in one tank. But not a whole lot of successful repeats on that feat.

No trigger should go in your 46 and about the biggest fish you'll want to research is a dwarf angle of some kind. Flames, Coral Beauty, Potters (more challenging eaters and ship poorly), etc. Some cardinals can get some size to them and do ok in a 46 but not a lot of movement and color. Some wrasse like a mystery, melanarus, radiant and leopards (again callenging) get some size to them and would do ok but definitely research these. While some are reef safe coral wise they typically are not invert safe and shrimp, snails and crabs are always on the menu. Flame hawks are good too but again may take out inverts.

Real quick, what is this? I know it's a hob filter of some sort but it has a sponge and a bag of junk, I've never seen one before

That filter is a AquaClear HOB power filter. It looks to be a AC50 but I'm not sure. That bag is activated carbon which absorbs odors, discoloration, and impurities. It basically improves water quality. That "sponge thing" is foam and traps particles and debris. It enhances biological filtration. I own two AC filters, one AC110 and one AC70, they are great and the best HOB filters IMO as you can customize what filter media you want to use.

It can be used to run filter floss or the sponge along with carbon and/or GFO (granular ferric oxide) or something like Chemipure Elite. Carbon retains organics while GFO absorbs phosphate and some remove silica. Chemipure is essentially both in one bag. If that filter is off of another tank, toss the sponge and the carbon bag and buy new floss and media. Also, soak the entire filter box and tube (twist off the motor first) in a white vinegar/tap water bath for several hours and then rinse it well. As for the sponge, either buy multiples so they can be changed often or use filter floss and replace that often. The floss or the sponge will go on the bottom with the other media on top. Clean the box itself every couple of weeks.
