Yes, it looks like 3 is female and 7 is male. The belly on 3 looks female, so I was hoping the pictures were of two different fish!

Mine is 5 inches and doesn't have bristles. Does that mean it is definitely a female?

I would say yes.

I have a pic of her. It is on my other computer though so I can't attach. She is really skittish around me and likes to beat up the blind cave tetras.

Well.......I was a "chicken" about canisters when I started up my tanks so I went the HOB route....and still do, I have two HOB's on all three of my 4' tanks. With a canister I always had this "feeling" that I'd screw it up somehow and come home to find the tank drained out on the floor via the canister! I've never had water any issues running the two HOB's. I have the largest Aquaclear and Emporer Biowheel on those tanks.

Debbi, whats the difference between a male and females belly?
Im strugglign to sex my own BN's which are a year~ old. One is deffinetly male, whilst the other has small bristles around the mouth only which its had for the past ...10 or so months. Its considerably larger/chunkier then the male. Both are normal finned brown BN's

Take a look at this female. Now she's quite full with eggs but see how far down the dark part of her organs are....in the males that dark part extends all the way down to the second set of pelvic fins and is wider. Even when the females are not full of eggs you can see the difference. I don't think I have a shot of any of my males against the glass like that or I'd post them both. And the sides of the males are much more tapered. If you've got one with a chunkier middle, sounds female to me. Post pics of them against the glass if you can.

Interesting! I will have a look when i get home from college tomorrow!! ((At my girlfriends now - so got the family doing the two feeds and turning light on and off xD))
