Centerpiece fish for 45 gallon

I don't really like to focus on a centerpiece fish, per se. Instead, I like to create combos of fish that go well together, especially from the same waterways of the world.

They can live alone, but you will see much better coloration if you get 1 male + 1 Female.

what would be an interesting schooling fish I could add along with the angel or gourami? I would prefer something out of the ordinary but not too difficult to find.

marbled hatchet fish are reely cool, they arent something youde expect to see when you look into a fish tank and ive seen them at every fish based store ive been at (not petsmart, wallmart)

if youre still deciding on a centerpice i just want to let you know that gouramis tend to chew up the leafs of any soft or weak plants that they can find
and that if you go with gouramis to go with pearl gouramis
the last gourami i had killed 7 of my fish and herassed the rest and im not talking small neons and stuff, my gourami took out 2 african butterfly fish, a bolivan ram and an angelfish

by the way i have the same sized tank as you so any names you hear pop up wuld work in your tank
ram cichlids
rainbows
keyhole cichlids
sword tails
mollys
bettas
paradise fish
climbing pearch
red tail/rainbow shark

just thought ide guive you a few more options than gourami and angel (i hope you realise that you can have both )

As to the rainbows, I think they get a little too large for the tank I have right? I've read that they need a bigger tank. Any thoughts?

I would really like to have an opaline gourami, but I'm getting mixed reviews on the temperament of the species. What I might do is get the angels and a pair of pearl gouramis perhaps?

Thanks for the excellent advice everyone!

rainbows come in all sorts of sizes however thy do need to be in atleast a trio with two females to have any real colour going on that & they cost 8-18 dollars a pice i bought some once and they died OWW MY WALLET!

however you sound like you know what you want now so enjoy your tank
as far as the guourami goes if you realy want one just get some popcorn sit by the opaline tank for a while you may be able to deduce what ones are F****** MEAN!
idk if this helps but frome personal experience gouramis tend to fight the larger solotary fish the small schooling tetras and cories were alot less dead than my angels and rams the only large fish that seemed to do well were my various typs of catfish synos and pim cats that sorta thing

I guess I should have referred to the rainbows I was thinking of, Boesemani rainbows and turquoise rainbows. Those are the ones I am most attracted to, but they I have seen some full size ones and they look a little big.

If I do go with the blue gourami, it would probably only be kept with smaller schooling fish and corydoras like you mentioned.
