You CAN do a fish cycle and have the fish live through it with a bare minimum of exposure to ammonia. The trick is to have a very light bioload (very few or just one fish) OR to do massive daily water changes, perhaps twice a day at times.
Your ammonia test kit will tell you.
mvigor said:If you know anyone, ANYONE, with a freshwater aquarium that has been running for several months or longer, you can take a big handful of their gravel and put it in your tank and that will cause your cycle time to decrease to a week, give or take. If you could have one of their used filter pads, to put into your filter, you could cycle your tank even faster. Just be sure to keep the living invisible bacteria wet while you transport it from their house to yours.

I still have the oscars in the tank and all three of them are always hudled up together (soo cute) however I did notice my crab running after them ealier... I could not understand how one crab could run up on three baby oscars and they would only move once one of his claws was in their face..LOL Looks like the crab is king of the castle right now and is eating up my plants.... I still plan on taking the oscars back to the FS but right now they seem to be ok for the time being..... I will take them back sometime this week. I am already becoming attached to my babies.....
