New News

Well Ms Marley is not up to the photo taken like she was before her pregnancy. For some reason she seems real bashful now not wanting anyone to see her out side of her shell opening. LOL, she feels fat. All those hormones just have her out of whack. I tried for several hours on end trying to coach her out with treats and everything else I could think of and it just wasn't happening. I think she even flipped me off with one claw, cuss I told her she had to come out of there sooner or later and she poked one claw out and shook it at me. The next morning after me trying so hard Saturday to take pics she had moved the lime green anemone thing and the moss ball to her door, sort of like her caving herself in and everyone else out.

Well here are the pics that I did manage to snap.

O and she was burying her cave a little bit better to on Saturday so I got to see her shoveling sand around her house for a min or 2 and then she went back in and waited for me to leave.

Gestation period is 22-42 days.
Then the babies will sexually mature at 5-6 months old. Marbled Crays can carry 400-1000 eggs per pregenancy, usually more as the older they get.

She is now being a little braver at being out, I noticed this morning that she was out before I turned the lights on and I always try to warn her before I turn them on because it causes her to duck for cover, so I tapped gentley and told her I was fixin to cut them on and she just stayed there. I turned the lights on and she got under one of her plants and as I watched she went slowly back to her shell when she has been running for it. Like she don't want me to see that she is pregnant, LOL.
She isn't carring as many eggs now like she was or maybe she just rearranged them under her tail, IDK how that works. But I figured it is sort of like shrimp that they may drop a few before hatchin happens. It appears that she has dropped about 100 or so. When I 1st seen all the eggs it frightened me b/c it looked like someone had just crammed a couple of tablespoons of caviar under her.

I cleaned the algae off the glass last night so I maybe able to get some better pics within a few days + she is coming out more now too.

I am a Cray Granny!

Well it has finally happen, She has babies. They are so microscopic, spitting image of their mother. They are so cute.

It all was noticed Saturday morning when I came to feed and she was half way out of her home/shell and it looked like she was standing in the middle of snail poop (big pile), as I leaned in and looked closer it was dozens and dozens of tiny crays. I watched her very closely as I dropped in the food, algae disc, she grabbed it and pulled it under her so all her babies could eat, they were watching her and imatating her. So neat! Well the glass was a little green and I wanted to wait to clean to take pics, so I did.

Next was the drama of the day. My magnet algae scrubber slipped and cracked the side of the tank, :eek3:O CRAP! , yes it was leaking. So I managed to drop the water level below the crack and dry it off real good and now is where the imagination goes wild, find something to fix it until I can get to the store and get another one. Closest fish store about 45 mins away. Electrical tape (yellow), stretched tightly along the crack about 8 good strips, next duck tape, yep I know it holds the world together. It worked long enough for me to get a tank and get home.
Now the worry on how was I going to transfer her and all 500 of her babies, sheesh brain working overtime. I managed to get her in her shell and move a bowl close to her shell and gently scoot the shell, her and babies into the bowl. Hard part over. Next remove everything and move to new tank.

You got it, sand, ornaments, guppies, ghost shrimp, snails, filter, heater, finally Marley and all her babies. I did it!!!!!

I don't think that I lost anybody except maybe a few baby mts, no worries there though.

I was watching her Sunday, while I was checking all parameters of the tank. I seen her in the back with all her babies out around her and when she was ready to move on she took her pinchers and slapped the ground with them and all the babies jumped back on her, it was so facinating to watch her comunicate with her young. Here are some pics that I was able to capture of her and her babies along for the ride. Sorry about the being blurry.

I never imagined they could communicate like that, I'd give anything to see a vid of that! Well almost anything ^^

Very glad that Marley and babies made the transition okay :)
