Disprove Global Warming!!!

Well, this thread is chock full of opinions, but sadly very light on actual info. Anyone else out there with some more scientific journal articles to add? I distrust any sources from a media or web based outlet for obvious reasons.

Pick up any copy of Scientific American or Discover. I subscribe to both and there is not an issue (or almost never an issue) where there is some new proof of global warming, climate change, or mans involvement.

Seriously... they're both obsessed with the topic- and for good reason.

People that are worried at higher taxes or lower standard of living obviously don't understand how bad the economies- food shortages or water shortages could become on a global scale. You think the economy is bad now?

Well, higher taxes and a bad economy are immediate issues. Since we can't say for sure when food or water riots will be the norm, its easy enough not to think about it ever happening.

On another note though, please, those of you climate change skeptics... There's gotta be more compelling evidence out there. I'd hate to think think that most of the body of evidence has already been discussed.

Oh goodie Inka!!
Something to sink the teeth into.
But I am sorry to say I can not rebut the claim that global warming (although I prefer to say Climate Change because of the extremes we see on the cold side too) is a farce. Because it is NOT! And I know you are looking for facts for the other side, Inka. But I would like to have some input :)

Over Consumerism is the culprit if you want to get to the bottom line here. I have a ton of examples but I would like to stick to something that the aquarium world can relate.
Sharks.
Shark fin soup is a delicacy. It is considered a symbol of wealth in the Chinese culture, and because the shark does not get sick, they also believe it has medicinal properties. The demand for shark fin soup has risen in recent years because the number of people that can afford it is going up in China. Because of this perceived greatness and the fact that fishermen can get $300 for one pound of fins, sharks are being hunted in huge numbers, thus reducing the population. (and on a side note here, some fishermen cut off the fins of these sharks when they are still alive and throw the rest of the shark back in the water)

This imbalance in the oceans ecosystem threatens the balance of our air. With limited numbers of the top predator in our oceans, leaves other species to flourish. This is where the problem arises.Phytoplankton is a big producer of oxygen for our earth. The species that eat the phytoplankton are growing in numbers.....I think you get my point here.

We are all hurting the earth when we over consume, the pathway of our purchases can be tracked and yes, they are making an impact on our world.

I have not given any facts from sources here but there is a movie called Sharkwaters that is amazing information if anyone is interested. There is links on this site for facts about over consumerism.

There is a little video on the homepage, enjoy!

Global Warming:popcorn:

we can extend our spot in the Earths history.
If we time it right.. we can last long enough to see that gigantic rock from space crash into the planet and reshape the Earth..once again. ;)
which according to scientific studies ...we(humans) won't live to see ;)

interesting Debate.

As you can tell ..my opinion of it is.. A rock crashing into the planet is like riding a motorcycle

it's not a matter of if.. it's a matter of when.

;)

Well, no scientific information here, but I believe that the Earth goes through climate 'cycles' Ice age - Heat up - Ice age - heat up - etc... Something along those lines. Humans have somewhat sped up the process, yes, but we can't stop the earth from heating up... then probably freezing, they'll blame the freeze on not enough co2 in the atmosphere, or something like that.

Just MHO.

I agree with red_wall, global warming isn't down to humans completely, we just moved it on a bit faster than nature intended, it's just a natural cycle, earth moved from the ice age to the present climate without the help of man it'll continue cycling no matter what we do, so just relax and
don't worry about it, mother nature will sort things out, she's
done pretty well for the last few billion years without us interfering.

Actually, ironically, global warming will probably cause an ice age in Western Europe and the Eastern United States. (more so for Western Europe)

There is a circular current in the atlantic that brings in warmer water up from the equator along the coasts of western Europe- mixing with the water in the Northern lattitudes and then back down again- this acts to warm up North Western Europe- a big heat conveyour- and to a lesser degree heats up the Eastern US.

With glaciers melting in Greenland, the freshwater that is entering the ocean in large quantities could disrupt and turn off this heat conveyour and prevent the warmer waters from being drawn North from the equator.

Result- whereas much of the world is warmed up- Europe would be plunged into colder temperatures.

That's not the only thing we're doing that acts as a cooling effect... There is also the matter of global dimming. Soot and other particulates in the air is preventing sunlight from reaching the surface- resulting in... TADA cooler surface temperatures (and much less light). Areas surrounding heavy industry have more global dimming than areas that are not near any major industrial centre. Light levels are as much as 15% lower than they were 50 years ago in some places. No-where on earth is completely untouched. How this effects photosynthesis on a global scale (and as a result conversion of CO2 to Oxygen) is not really known- but you take away light- you take away plants ability to convert CO2 to Oxygen. The earth gets darker and hotter at the same time.

Global Dimming is confusing- it's both heating and cooling the earth at the same time- but probably more cooling- but it does not offset global warming.

The good news is, global dimming appears to be on the wane- the first wave of eco-friendly products and awareness has done a good job getting particulates out of the air... so global dimming IS being combatted.

The bad news is- although global dimming is slowly being fixed- many climate change models do not take into account mankind solving global dimming but not getting their hands around global warming.

As a result- global warming COULD be worse than any of the popular models suggested.
