DIY Spraybar

I did that on my spray bars...I drilled most of them facing forward or slightly down, and a few facing down and back slightly to get as much water exchange as possible.

One other question I had was about the spray paint. Isn't that toxic for the fish? Thanks!

No, the Krylon Fusion is underwater safe as long as you let it dry/cure fully. I only waited a few hours and most of mine has chipped off at this point. I would recommend waiting 24-48 hours before putting it into the tank.

Ok thanks for the info! I take it you found that a paint place, or home depot or lowes?

Yep, I think I got it at home depot in the paint section. Most any place that sells spraypaint should have it.

aardvark1,

Not to be a pain or anything but I'm seriously thinking of making a spraybar just like yours for my XP3. Could you get me the lengths of the pvc and the number of elbow parts? Just a quick list so I know exactly what to get when I go to home depot. Thanks!

EDIT: Do you think hooking up my XP3 to one side of the spraybar, and maybe hooking up a power head to the other end would be a good idea? Or should I just somehow make it where the XP3 only sprays on one side of the spraybar and the powerhead sprays the other? Any ideas? If this would be too much power than I don't need the powerhead I was just concerned about the output flow being too low.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a reply....

When I built mine though, coming from the 3/4" return line (vinyl hose), I went 3/4" barb x 3/4" MNPT into 3/4" FNPT x slip, into two 90* elbows to get up over and down into the tank, then into another 90, into the actual spray bar (3/4" pvc with holes drilled in it), with a 3/4" plug.

I remember in agri. class all about pipe fittings and stuff, but did you just connect your 90 elbows with say a 1 1/2" or 2" peice. Or did you just do a 1" peice because if I remember correct those elbows are 1/2" deep right?

Did you have this spraybar on a 55gal. If so how long did you make the spraybar part. I'm sure I could go figure it out within 5 min. but I just want to know what you did. Thanks!

I have one on a 55 and two on 150s...the one on the 55 is 12" or so, give or take.

I believe 1" fittings are all either sch. 40 or sch. 80, so the sockets should be 1" deep. I just cut a bunch of 2" sections to connect the 3 elbows on the one end (where the spray bar goes over the tank rim) so the ends of the 90* fittings butted up against each other with basically no pipe showing in between them.
