Do you buy fish from Petco or Petsmart?

I live in the middle of nowhere but I have a PETCO close by, I only go there to look at fish. Once I pick a fish I call my lfs (not really local lol), if they have that fish and they usually do, I make the hour drive. Remember, quality fish are worth the drive.

I just bought some $1 Mollies from my PetSmart. I have been wanting some more but the LFS I like has had issues getting in fish lately. The Petsmart is as clean or maybe a bit cleaner than the LFS so I dont have any real issues with them. The Petsmart feeds veggies in the tanks, no floaters and fish all the fish seem very active.

I have another LFS on the other side of town and they scare me. Only have an airstone on each tank. No filtration on any tank what so ever. And the place smells like doggie doo.

I've bought a fair amount of fish at Petsmart and a lot of plants and briggs. My last batch of fish, 6 silver hatchets, ended up with ich. Everyone has survived ok though and ich happens. It was no big deal.

As far as Petco goes, I've never bought anything live there that I can remember. Maybe a betta back in high school but I don't know for sure. I do buy a lot of my supplies there though. Their freshwater fish all look fine to me but the location is bad. They are right in the middle of 2 much better fish stores both price and quality wise.

I will purchase from both, although not frequently. I just picked up a nice delta tail betta from a local Petco. I work at the other place, so when I do occasionally purchase from there, I know what I'm getting. My coworker and I are also waiting for the $1 tetra sale to snag some cardinals :D I've never had huge problems with either purchases, although it seems to be hit or miss on LFS in the area (the "good" ones are 40+ minutes out).

Really, you need to look at it and decide. You know what's an unacceptable amount of deads and sick fish. And QT!

I buy fish from the Petco near me or online. There is an LFS that I used to visit, but they sell puppies and I am against selling puppies in a pet store. Especially since I have seen the same ones there since November and they are still asking $1000 for 6-7 month old puppies. They shouldn't grow up in a cage. It makes me too sad to go there. :( I just QT and have never had a problem. A Petsmart recently opened near me as well but I haven't visited it.

Nope. The only thing I'd get from them are supplies that I can't get anywhere else.

My favorite LFS is abotu 10 minutes away and a reputable fish store about 30 minutes away.

I have bought from both stores, just have to watch how the fish acts before buying. With any new fish there should be a qt time just due to the stress moving them..I could never buy fish online, buying a fish i never saw is something i would never do..

I've bought from both stores on occasion, esp. when there's a sale. I do frequent them more than I care for since my kids keep a hamster so we go there to get supplies for it. The maintenance is fair to good in my area. I do have an excellent LFS and two good ones about 30 min away so I go there most of the time.

i prefer the LFSs owned by familys rather than by big "mom and pop" stores because they typically arnt bound by contract and have a better selection. the place i go i never know what to expect because the selection is always different

i only have one lfs(which is mostly sw :() and a petsupermarket. i buy from my petsupermarket because i have few other options (cant drive! >_<)
and because they are getting better with the whole fish situation, and trying to fix up thier facilities(new tanks live plants etc.) i have also gotten some good fish from there too!
