yea about 3 inches from the top. and you can first try it with one bottle.. It will take some time before it activates and starts to produce constant bubbling. at first when i just started it, on the 2-3 day it was about a bubble every 7 seconds. Also lol as i learned dont shake the bottle once its been activated, i had to wash my whole wall because yeast juice splattered all over the place.
