Goldfish and?

those are goodlooking healthy fish but the thing that dosent make sense is you said they are 1-2 years old. none of those fish in that pic are that old or even close.

I was thinking the same thing. I recently adopted two goldfish which are both a year old and 6-8" long. The lady I got them from purchased them a year ago as feeder size goldfish for her oscar, but they escaped.

From the picture you posted, the goldfish DO look stunted. A good indication of their stunted growth are the size of their eyes in comparison to their body. IMHO, you as a person should not have fish, as it is quite obvious by your blatant disregard of other people's perfectly sound and helpful advice, as well as your continued denial of the way you are treating your fish.

Anyways, back on topic in regards to your original question and in response to some of the other posts.

No, you should not get an algae eater; the main reason being your tank is already overstocked.

However, contrary to what many people say about incompatibilities between goldfish and other tropical fish, this is not necessarily true. Although goldfish are natively coldwater fish, I personally have had great success in raising them in tropical temperatures with tropical fish AND tropical plants. Its a long story, but I currently have five 8" goldfish living very comfortably (and peacefully) with: 7 adult Angelfish (2 of which are a breeding pair), 6 cories, 11 otos, 4 SAEs, 12 black phantom tetras...all in a 135gal heavily planted tank. In fact, all the fish seem to be quite happy; both the cories and goldfish have spawned numerous times in the tank.

I originally started with the 5 goldfish as feeders I bought from the LFS for $1 each. They were all placed into a 20gal tank, and within 6 months they grew to 6". It was obviously overstocked, so they were temporarily moved into a 30gal for a little while before joining the 135gal.

Honestly, either give the fish back to the LFS, or get a larger tank.

They are deffinetly stunted, my goldfish(comet, or 'feeder fish') went from about and inch to 5" in 6 months, because they have a good diet, and a properly sized pond.
While your goldfish could live to be 5-10 years old, and you may think that's a long life, consider the fact that they can live 30+ years.

I'm not trying to discourage you from keeping fish, we all start somewhere.
my first tank ( a 10 gal) had 1087256456 guppies and mollies, I had no clue that was bad. But if you stick around for a while you may be interested in keeping other fish and inverts.
I hope you stick around the forums for a while, most people who hear what they are doing is wrong just leave, because they can't stand hearing it.
I'm not saying that thats what you are doing.
You probably think we're crazy lol
Because we care about fish soo much, but to me, they are no less important than any other animal.
I'm sorry that your first posts got you, well, flamed.
Again, good luck with your fish.

I'm sorry but there is no way in **** that they are 1-2 years old and still that small, i mean how stunted can a fish get!

It is actually very believable that they are 1-2 years old. My aunt has a pair of goldfish she has had for 2 years now that are about that size. They too are stuck in a 10 gallon tank. Not only that, she forgets to feed them sometimes :(

from what i've read (and continue to read) about goldfish in warm water, it seems that its not the immediate warmth of the water which will kill/harm the fish, but that the warmer water a) has less oxygen and thus the fish need to work harder to breath, b) speeds up the fish's metabolism so that it has a shortened lifespan c) stresses them out so they it is easier for them to become diseased.

a couple articles i've found on the subject:

I got two Wakins golds and two Shubs in my 120G and I will probably stop there. I'm resisting the urge to get one more because with all the water changing (reduces hormones in the water that the fish's body senses to regulate growth) I'll be looking a ginormous fish in a year. The tank looks empty now but it will get crowded.

You have to figure out what you want to do over the long run. The fish in the pic looks stunted (the eye). My tank also has as much decoration as yours does. I need all the space for the fish to get a lot of exercise.

Where can I buy a 20 gallon or 30 gallon tank online for cheap? I don't want one that's going to break, if I flood this apartment I'm screwed.

well if you wait till like the 26 or 28th just go to Petco, the are having a 1$ per gallon sale, so just get a 30 or a forty. And then get a filter rated higher than your tank, gold fish are messy and poo alot.

:iagree:
There you go. Or wait till Labor Day when everyone has a sale on everything.

Your golds at least look healthy - I like they way the dorsal sits straight up. With mine the dorsal position is one of the first things I look for to see if the fish are ill or stressed.
