help sexing dempseys

thanks! ive been wanting to do this for years but gotten really bad advise from local pet store.... they let any moron work there i guess. so didnt have any luck. but thanks to this site and lots of researching it was quite easy!

I think you said you have only Jacks and a couple cats in there? I'll look forward to hearing more of how the babies do. I have a male and female Jack that I bought at the same time, but the male has grown SO much faster than the female, I'm not sure they're a good match anymore. What's more, I'm hoping they don't mate, because I've heard that the adults get very aggressive toward any other fish in the tank that they may see as threats to the babies. I've already lost several smaller fish to this male Jack, and had to move other fish out of "his" tank-- even tho' it's been "their" tank for much longer!

well at this time i only have a very small common pleco in this tank. and the parents are only 4 inches if that. im sure when they are larger they will DEMAND more space. as of now they only bother the pleco when he enters their 1/3 of the tank that they stay to. as for the babies im looking into getting a 30 gallon grow out tank to transfer them into when they reach 1/2 inch. and im not really too worried about the amount i end up with... this was just a first attempt. wasnt expecting to make it this far already lol. obviously i have no grow out tank lol.

ok i need some advice. momma and babies stay to one side of the tank. so when i do my water changes i can only vacuum one side... is this going to be ok or do i need to chase them to the other side to do a thorough cleaning?

I think they'll be fine with only one end being vacuumed.

Nice! So what are your plans with them? These guys are much easier to get rid of than convict cichlids.

Start asking around at non-chain pet stores and see if they'll take any.
