well this LFS usually labels everything with scientific name first and common name second if that means anything
I've found them to be pretty reliable with labeling their fish properly.
I'm wondering what source will be right as well. I've seen pics just like that one on both reds and blacks, but I think it's safe to at least say we know it's a phantom of one kind or the other.
this link http://www.elmersaquarium.com/10tetra_blackphantom.htm shows a male and female, so it would appear you may have a female black phantom. this one http://www.fishtanksandponds.info/p...aracins-small/hyphessobrycon-loretoensis3.htm also looks a lot like yours and is referred to as the black phantom.
this one http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=893p looks exactly like the ones at my LFS. which has the black anal fin, while yours appears to have the red one.
this one http://tropicalfishgallery.com/spec...s_sweglesi.html looks a lot like yours and is called out as a red phantom, and this one http://www.elmersaquarium.com/10tetra_redphantom.htm looks similar as well.
I'm beginning to think it may be a female black phantom since I've definitely seen more red phantoms being more red all over (although not as much as a serpae) or with much more intense red coloring on their fins.
so long story short I think I am going to go with the following conclusion: you probably have the female black phantom since i nthe first link here the male has the black anal fin and the female definitely has a red anal fin. I wouldnt' completely rule out the red phantom but it's looking less likely the more research I do on it.
