ID new fish

well this LFS usually labels everything with scientific name first and common name second if that means anything ;) I've found them to be pretty reliable with labeling their fish properly.

I'm wondering what source will be right as well. I've seen pics just like that one on both reds and blacks, but I think it's safe to at least say we know it's a phantom of one kind or the other.

this link http://www.elmersaquarium.com/10tetra_blackphantom.htm shows a male and female, so it would appear you may have a female black phantom. this one http://www.fishtanksandponds.info/p...aracins-small/hyphessobrycon-loretoensis3.htm also looks a lot like yours and is referred to as the black phantom.

this one http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=893p looks exactly like the ones at my LFS. which has the black anal fin, while yours appears to have the red one.

this one http://tropicalfishgallery.com/spec...s_sweglesi.html looks a lot like yours and is called out as a red phantom, and this one http://www.elmersaquarium.com/10tetra_redphantom.htm looks similar as well.

I'm beginning to think it may be a female black phantom since I've definitely seen more red phantoms being more red all over (although not as much as a serpae) or with much more intense red coloring on their fins.

so long story short I think I am going to go with the following conclusion: you probably have the female black phantom since i nthe first link here the male has the black anal fin and the female definitely has a red anal fin. I wouldnt' completely rule out the red phantom but it's looking less likely the more research I do on it.

where did he find that pic and is the source reliable, or is it mislabeled?!?
Its from fishbase. Its an unbelievable site, definitely belongs in your bookmarks.

They have this for a Red Phantom by the same photographer…

Those two aren't the primary photo for either, but I thought they addressed the coloring issues and were by the same guy.

Hyphessobrycon sweglesi Red Phantom Tetra
Hyphessobrycon megalopterus Black Phantom Tetra

Wow, 65 posts in this thread. You all are awesome...

I've update the original post with the IDs that I'm convinced about. I'm ALMOST ready to add the Black Phantom.

The only one you guys haven't figured out is Group 6. What's wrong? Everyone's slacking off! I gave a detailed description [he likes to hide]. Nobody can figure it out from that?!? :)

what does he look like? if you can give us something close to a body style we may be able to get you on the right track anyway ;)

does it look likea pleco, or is it more loachy looking, or cichlidy?

Oh now we're going to get all serious. :)

Ok, he's all black, downturned mouth for bottom feeding, very much pleco-looking. Short, maybe 2-3 inches tops. He's wide when you look down on him from the top.

I'll have to get a pic, there's just too many Plecos.
