Looks like a juvenile smallmouth bass to me.

Nope, sorry not a smallmouth bass.

However it is in the same family as the Australian Bass.

I picked it because it's a personal favourite and also because I knew it would get people thinking and giving google & fishbase a real workout.

Ok, time for the BIG clue.

This fish is a nocturnal ambush predator, it's not only nocturnal by nature but nocturnal by name also.
