Jay's Planted 180g Tank.

What happened to the Discus?

Sadly only 2 survived the quarantine. They are in there believe it or not when they don't want to be bothered they get darker and hide among the tall crpts on the back right. I've managed to gain their trust enough that they'll eat out of my hand when they feel like it which I find cool. The one that had stopped eating has finally taken to frozen beef heart which I've been feeding him 2x a day. It already has a pitched hopefully it's not too late for him he's got one bad eye so I make sure he eats when he shows interest. The other fends for itself.

That's bad news, man. Another testament to the value of quarantining your fish though.
They looked like a really nice group! Does that put you off getting more in the future then?

I'm on the fence about getting more Discus they were suppose to be the focal point of my planted tank. I do have a bit of a soft spot for the one with the eye issue I can hand feed him. I am afraid if I do get more he's going to get abused. As it is the other one has it's moments when it's chasing it off.

Here are some pics from today nothing crazy BBA looks to be ready to spring but I'm dosing 60ml of Excel once a week after lights out and it seems to be enough to keep it at bay. These pics aren't so cloudy....

The patern made this one my favorite.

You can see the pinched head on the one, it also has bad eye I think it's blind in, luckily it recently started eating beefheart right out of my fingers so I hope to plump him up again. He doesn't seem to have the vision to feed on the RCS like the other does.

Thank you,

C. Sterbai I see?

Yes there's a group of 10 sterbai which only recently started displaying breeding behavior. I don't know if they'll survive this community. I do have a group of long fin and regular peppered cories that bread in a 45L community tank but only ever saw 1 baby reach maturity.

How has the MTS been to work with? Would you do it again?

It's a love hate relationship since I'm a tinker I like moving things around since I'm not much of a aquascaper. It is also great for root feeders but I've started dosing again after 9 months after seeing some deficiencies in plants. I didn't actually do the drying process myself I was fortunate to get leftover from another member but I did the sifting (pain) it was labor intensive because the dirt were like rocks the size of baseballs, bought the fert from a ceramics place and mixed (messy). Over all I wanted to experience it myself since it had become popular in our plant club. I've recently seen threads on dirt tanks and I need to try that to compare results.

I haven't visited this thread for months, beautiful tank. Love the discus, hope the little guy makes it, I found myself "awww-ing" over his pic.

When you do a large water change try doing one really big, then take a spray bottle with Excel and hit the wood with it.
Then refill a minute or two later, this will kill any BBA on the wood.

While the tank refills, take a hard toothbrush and you should be able to get any of the BBA left when you could not spray.
Make sure not to get any excel on plants, it will burn them at high cocentrations.

Likely might need to clean the filter more often, and focus on good current at the surface/mixing and then......CO2 slow and progressively and watch the fish.
They will turn dark and act lazy, not feed etc if there is too much

If they are new, they do this anyway........so you have to be careful before deciding there.
I'd do Excel daily at 90 mls for 2-3 weeks to beat back any BBA as soon as you do the water change and attack it aggressively.
This should beat it way back and help the issue.

CO2 and decent O2 from there.

Most soil declines in Nitrogen only over time, 6-18 months typically..........
So if you dosed say Traces/K+ before and now dose other things......you might just add some KNO3..........
