khuli loaches

IMHO, saying that a 10 gallon is too small for kuhlies is a bit over the top. They are very small and do not need much swimming space. They are not a quick fish that zips around all over the place, in fact they are pretty much the exact opposite of that.

my 4 kuhlis zip around like they are on crack. maybe I got the active type. I have a heavily planted 90 gal and I can see at least 2 of the 4 I have at all times whizzing around......strange.

Kuhli loaches can reach up to 4" in length and can get quite fat. They do like to swim around a lot and need lots of swimming space. If they are not exhibiting this behavior it could be due to several things: like improper group size, poor water quality, improper temperature, too much lighting or not enough places to hide.

How many do you reccommend keeping in a group? I used to have 3 in the 1st tank in my sig and they almost always hid. When they did come out they still were not extremely active. They just crept along the bottom scavenging for food. Never zipped around all over like you say. Was the tank too small? Did I have too small a group?

I would recomend 5-7 minimum. Your tank may have been too bright for them, did you watch for them at night?

I have two kuli loaches, and one of them seems to have finrot.
i think they got it from a cherry barb i used to have (died)
the tail is all weird
and torn
the other one seems to have it as well but not as severely
is there any way i can fix this?
i do 10-20% water changes daily ._.
and its not getting any better
in fact it got worse.

kuhli replie

i have a emerald corry catfish, 3 blck kuhli's, 2 regular kuhli's, a hillstream loach, a chinese algae eater, 1 bamboo shrimp, 2 dwarf frogs and a paradise fish. they are doing heavenly in my ten gal freshwater tank. No fighting or anything so i bet you can have a group of 5 kuhli's in a 5 gallon tank

thanks...im getting 5 for my 29 gal(I found my peacock eel a good home :( ).
kuhlie loach:your ten gal is way OS IMO...and 5 would be very unhappy in a five gal..JMHO.
