Knifefish

WOW big corner tank! get two right away

I have been thinking about the whole breeding BGKs for sometime, and sitting in my genetics class, I am thinking about asking my Professor if I can possibly do a research on them and seeing if I can sample them and do a chromosome look and identify their sexes by physically looking at there chromosomes! Its a crazy idea, but seriously, the instituion has the needed materials!!! So if I can sex them, I can pair them up and BREED!!!!

Just a crazy idea, maybe too crazy

That would be one step, but there would be a host of other conditions to be met before the knifes would breed. And then how do you treat the fry? It might be a term paper or even a theses in the making!

well I just talked to my professor, and sounds like we are going to try it, sexing bgks, thats the first step into breeding I guess huh! Trail and error, whats the harm, no fry?

More power to ya buddy! You would be the first in the northern hemisphere to do this and I'm sure that fame & fortune would follow :bowing:

I was going to PM you pl*co, but I think you have it disarmed. I need to know where I can get a fish like the one in your avatar. Is that the Corel variety or the Adobe strain?

thats a real fish?

sorry just glanced over that fish...anyways, I clicked on the views button and I clicked on the posts button, this one is definately the most, besdies the stickies! CRAZINESS!

wow lots of action here .... Matak, nice big tank it will be super. Ryknier sounds like yu got your hands full, interesting project. Best of luck! I read that you can tell the male from the female. The male has a wider head and its more 'horselike' in shape. Something about the color of the eyes too which are darker in the male I think. Female as a more narrow and sharper pointed head. This thread is ggggggggggrrrrrowing!

"The best way that a male has been described to me is that his head is shaped more like that of a horse's head and it's eyes are more towards the top of it's head. Whilst the female has a slender head and it's eyes are lower and more towards the front of it's head close to it's mouth. There is also another way that I have not been able to fully verify yet and that is the male have larger eyes and they are fully black whilst the female has smaller eyes which are moreof an opaque colour."

This is from the BGK forum from above, and here it is again, BGK Forum

If all goes well with this whole research thing, shall i post it on here? I have to make sure this whole thing fits in with ym school schedule
