Thanks Dun. Since the replacements are cheap I may try that route if I can find someone willing to do the installation. Otherwise I might try to fiddle around more with the drivers and stuff if I feel comfortable.

Sorry, never meant for the linux to get so off topic. Just thought that if you could boot from usb or cd without installing when it boots up into linux it would make sound and you could tell if it was something wrong in windows or if it is a hardware issue.

Sounds like it is a hardware issue, possibly the switch in the headphone jack mentioned earlier and in that thread that dun posted. If you are at a school try finding a computer/science teacher or maybe even the school tech guy.
