LFS in your area

If you're looking for a store specializing in SW, there is Reef Tech. This store looks like a museum's aquarium! I saw SW Fishes/Invertebrates that I've never seen before, or heard about. Come check it out.

The Woodlands (north of houston) Texas

I've been to the following 3 stores that I would recommend. They are not too far into Houston proper so you'll save gas if you're coming from Conroe/The Woodlands/Spring etcetera.

1. Ultimate Fish, 4720 FM 2920. A couple miles down 2920 off I-45. Specialize in cichlids and have a decenet assortment of other fish. Also carry Marine fish. Good deals on driftwood/rocks

2. PetCo, location on Sawdust Road right off I-45. This PetCo location is actually good, and has the blessing of the local fish forum I am a member of. Nice selection of beginner tropical community fish, and some saltwater stuff.

3. Fish-R-Us, 10855 HWY 242. A couple miles down 242 off I-45. Huge selection of freshwater fish and a decent selection of marine and coral frags. Pretty high prices is a big negative though.

I have only shoped at the west side. The staff seems decently knowledgeable, just depends on who you get. Good selection of FW and decent selection of SW too.

Nice display tanks. A Nice selection of FW. And also a decent selection of SW. They seem a bit pricey on some of the fish and items though.

I am new to salt water but i was impressed with this store. This is a smaller shop but they seem to deal in quality rather than quantity. All the tanks looked very clean and the fish looked amazing. What i liked the most was the staff knew what they were doing. I asked about protein skimmers and before i could say anything else he told me that they did not deal in junk, and they didnt sell anything like the prizm's or other garbage. He also recommended the aqua C skimmers which is what i was looking for anyways. The prices also seemed reasonable. Alot of theyre equipment was about the same price you would find it on the internet, shipping included. I will be going back to them.

Lake Norman Area - North Carolina

I have visited 4 LFS in the Lake Norman area - although I only purchased from one - but here are my opinions:

Then new Petco in Huntersville off of Sam Fur is where I have made my purchases. They are a new store so everything is clean and nice. They have a good selection and the staff is pretty knowledgeable. I was worried about the quality of the fish from a large chain - and when I went "cheap" buying 12 cent goldfish - I got what I paid for! But my Tetras and Betta from there all look good and I am pleased with the prices there!

I checked out Pet Mania in Huntersville (next to Target) and while the staff is nice their tanks looked HORRIBLE! and the selection stunk. I would not buy fish there but I guess it depends on what you are looking for. They are a smaller Mom & Pop type store.

I also went to Scales and Tails in Cornelius (on Main Street) and was not impressed either. They had a VERY small selection of fresh water (I didn't really check out the SW since I wasn't in the market but they seemed to have more). Very small M&P place but not what I was looking for.

Lastly, I tried PetSmart in Mooresville and while they had a pretty good selection and the staff was nice, I felt it wasn't any better than Petco and since Petco is much closer to me I just stuck with them.

:)

Three of the best that I've found in Houston, TX are:

Fish Mart
Hwy 59 (Eastex Frwy) Between Tidwell and Parker on the nortbound feeder.
This place has great selection, low prices and knowlegeable, helpful staff.
Can't go wrong here!

The Best LFS in my Area
Dave's Pet And Soda City
http://www.davessodaandpetcity.com/index.php
This place has a great fish selection, sell soda and human food, they sell dogs, cats, fish, and other animals. They always have RTC(Redtailed Cats), Marbled Pims, RTCXTSN(Where I got my cats) , cichlids, tetras. But they don't carry that much Oddfall fish.

http://www.feederssupply.com/index.htm The one in McMahan Plaza is my LFS. They have 2 'fish guys', who really know their stuff. Even their normal employees know the basics of water quality, how to cycle a aquarium, and for the most part they all know how big of a tank that a certain fish might need. They dont have a big selection of actual fish, but they do carry a decent selection of supplies (tanks, stands, rocks, food ect.), and they will custom order any thing you might need including fish.
Pet's Palace

Louisville, KY 40220

This Place is hard to find but worth it. This is a great place to find what ever you need. I highly recommend just visiting this place. They even have their own petting zoo. Never been out there but it looks cool through the door. They breed there own snakes. Countless species of snakes, and turtles. Very impressive freshwater and marine fish selection. Huge Bird room. and lots more.
I have to second this. They have a nice selection of marine and tropical fish. Their store does seem kind of dirty though, and I think I got ich from some tiger barbs they had once (i know i could have prevented it)
