LFS in your area

Not sure if its in this thread (search yielded nothing), but Wonderful World of Fish in Queens, New York has closed down. I went there a couple of weeks ago and there were some workers there hanging up a "Retail space coming soon" sign.

They are phasing out fish, so everything will be going on sale in the future. You can pick up a a new 29 gallon biocube for about half of where I have seen it else where. They have a pretty big selection of just about everything fish related, but do your self a favor and stay away from their tanks, everything is covered in green algeae, everything, I guess the good knews is the only fish I saw left were algea eaters, and 1 massive pleco. The store in general is bad, the owner is nuts and knows nothing about fish, or anything other than being crazy for that matter but if your in the Northern Chicago burbs and looking for a deal on fish stuff, might be worth walking in.

Any suggestions for St. Pete, FL? Thread search results provided nothing. I've gone to a couple in the area but they are really lacking.

The following is strangely named because it is freshwater only! It is the coolest shop in San Francisco - the tanks are all different and have home made lights, they're heavily planted, and the species selection is always very broad and interesting - lots of microrasboros, CPDs, endler's livebearers, exotic guppies, rare danios, cool cichlids, dwarf corys, pencilfish, killifish, discus raised WITHOUT hormones, all sorts of unusual things and new stuff all the time. The fish are virtually ALWAYS HEALTHY! Justin, the owner, is always there and gives very good advice plus his wife and daughter are there too and they are super nice. It's very down to earth and even won an award for being the best place for a cheap date in San Francisco one year.

Oh, additionally he likes you to bring in water to test, especially if you're a new customer. He won't sell unless your parameters are good. "I don't sell fish just for them to go die" he said to me once. He has fifty years experience in the field.

Oh, also, he sells a good, cheap bottled CO2 setup and will teach a number of ways of injecting it, how to make your own bubble counters that still look good, all kinds of good things.

Aqua Forest Aquarium is super-cool. It specializes in ADA nature aquarium stuff so they have all the fancy CO2 stuff, a great selection of plants, ADA brand tanks, filtration, planting tools, all sorts of great stuff. Their fish selection is picturesque and interesting - plus they're always healthy! Their stuff seems expensive to me, but the quality the best.

What I don't like are their fishnerd boy helpers. They act just like snotty computer nerd guys who work in electronic shops - not really friendly and sometimes it feels like they lord it over you with all their technical knowledge. But if you can overlook that, they are good sources of information.

So just visited the newest fish store in Seattle. It's called Aquarium Plus. Nice little store (emphisis on little I think it's around 1000sqft), but it does have a good range of items and everything looked healthy and clean.

I talked with the owner (I assume atleast) for about 20 minutes. He seems like a very knowledgeable guy. The stores main focus is nano tanks, which is a nice turn from most of the other fish stores in the area which are primarally focused on arrowana and flowerhorns. Not only that, but it is clean and fairly well put together.

The selection is good for what he has to work with though there is not a lot of hardware. As I said he is more focused on the nano market (remeber though this is technically 30G and under) so most of the fish are small community fish and then a few angels and discus. I may have to have a talk to this man about dwarf cichlids. There was also a setup for freshwater shrimp. Prices on what the fish that had them up were good if not lower than average for the area. The lack of a comparable store makes this hard to really gauge.

They also had a decent selection of plants in stock. There was a lot of small foreground cover. Not really much in the way of tall plants, but we'll see where he goes with it.

Address and contact below, it's at the very top of the international district hill.

It's a small aquarium that some lady runs out of her basement, they have a great arrangement of community fish and cichlids, not much else though. The owner is very strict, may be rude, she'll frequently quiz you about how you'll take care of the fish you're about to purchase. For some fish, she'll require you to bring in a water sample. However stern, they're usually very friendly, they take care of the fish there very well, there's never any dead fish, all their fish are bought locally, look great and act well.
