moderator abuse

Jalo Reef; the point is well made that the rules are made clear when you sign up including that editing posts is something that happens, when necessary. The opinions in the thread positive and negative are as valid as all get out albeit they arn't necessarily your own. Its not a question of missing the point.

The thread hasn't degenerated into abuse whatsoever - compliments to all who have posted - and there's no reason for it to do so now.

I don't disagree with any of what's said there - my point is perhaps AC should take a look at whether moderators should be editing what other people say. Just because its a rule doesn't make it a good rule. I've even PMed one mod asking him just to delete any of my posts he has a beef with. You're not me, when you edit my post you are speaking for me.

Explain to me how that's ethical and I'll shut right up.

edit - for the record, I didn't call anyone any names. thank you to all those who have PMed me to agree, I can appreciate your reasons for not posting it on here.

We don't change the context of the body of the post. We edit out bad words or direct insults...

sometimes a user will put lots of work in a post. It'll happen from time to time that the user will slip up and put something he/she shouldn't. It would be a shame to lose the valuable info from that user's reply because of one slip-up.. Therefore, out of respect for the info that the user provided, we'll edit out the part that shouldn't have been there, again, without changing the context of the post itself.

I hear ya dude, but you are wasting your time. They will just point out the rules and tell you that you are free to leave. They don't want to hear it & don't care anyway. :D

wow... did just about EVERYONE miss the point. And it took me 20 seconds to write the post, hardly "sitting around for hours" complaining.

I HAVE NO PROBLEM IF THEY DELETE MY POST - GO FOR IT - JUST DO NOT EDIT WHAT I AM SAYING, YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO DO THAT.

The post that caused me to start this thread contained no vulgarity, no false information, but one of the mods thought it was "rude" and edited it. My point is, if it really rubbed him the wrong way he should just delete it, I DON'T WANT OTHER PEOPLE CHANGING MY WORDS. I even said in my post "I can be a **** from time to time," its not like I'm not acknowledging my own part!!!!!

I think in 99% of the cases the mods probably do WAY more good than harm, but the very idea that they can edit or change your post is abusive in my mind. It gives them the power to misrepresent what others are saying. I'm not even saying that's what happened in this case, but I have a real problem with it conceptually. Why do I have to leave this forum??? Why can't I point out something that might help it??? Shoot I think the very mod who edited my post already said just about the same thing IN THIS THREAD.

wow, could you guys kiss up a little more???? Sorry... that was RUDE

cheech - that's a legit response and I appreciate it, as opposed to showing me the rules. At least it speaks to the whole point of the concern. I knew this thread would quickly deteriorate into a love fest for the mods (again, who my interactions have been largely positive with), so they should feel good about it. Those who agree have already PMed me, but I wasn't looking for that either. Whether its a fish forum or any other venue, its a slippery slope to allow someone to edit the words of another person, and while I think in a majority of cases the context is preserved, you can't guarantee that.

I could argue whether my OP was rude to begin with, it contained no vulgarity, didn't attack anyone, for whatever reason exception was taken. If I'd flipped out and dropped a bunch of language then I would say "ah well, my fault."

I'm sure everything I write from now on will be under the microscope. whatever.

Kudos to the mods for generally showing a decent amount of restraint despite the need for a G (or PG) rating.

That said, Wow - I think this is as close as we're ever gonna get, so:

if we wouldn't want to hear it and give you the simple option to leave, I doubt this thread would have lasted 18 pages with LOTS of input from numerous mods.

And don't tell us we don't care about the site or the users in the site. The users make the site. That was uncalled for.

Jalo reefa, another thing.

depending on the context of the edited thread, the mod editing it may put a disclaimer a small "post edited by xxx because of xxx"... It's not required for simple word filter edits, but on more complicated issues, the mod might put that disclaimer.

That's really not true, and not very fair to say (bold is mine). The staff here has the fun (read: usually thankless) job of deciding what is and isn't appropriate. Clearly, not everyone agrees with our decisions 100% of the time. However, SOMEONE has to make the decision, and that's the staff, and as staff members we have intrinsically accepted the fact that we're going to catch flak for our decisions once in a while. However, as illustrated in this thread, the majority don't seem to have much problem with the moderation style here.

As far as the "if you change my posts you're changing my message"...I think that's a little over the top. If you say "hey that's a [bleeping] bad idea" and a mod changes it to "hey that's a bad idea", the original intent of the message has not fundamentally changed one iota. We're not changing your message or putting words in your mouth, just keeping the tone on a less-aggressive nature. You are basically saying, it hasn't been a problem yet, but I'm taking issue with it on principle because some day it might. I would agree with you if a mod came in after you posted and completely twisted your words...but I've been a member here for a good while now and have never seen that, and it doesn't seem too likely to start now. I would say that if it does happen, I would definitely encourage you to take issue with it because, as a staff member, even I would have a serious problem with that. I'd say worry less about what *could* be a problem at some point in time (or not). JMHO of course.
