New 30 gallon planted tank build.

Why are the leaves so brown? Do they have "dirt" on them from the substrate? If so, try to clean it off. You should just be able to swish the water around the leaves. It will probably cloud up the water again but your filters should be able to clear that up and without the film on the leaves, they'll be able to photosynthesize much better.

If you're taking about the anubiases I actually tried that already and couldn't get it to come off. Any other suggestions. I'm game for anything. If you're talking about the swords then I'm hoping the root tabs will help with the browning of the leaves. The guy at the LFS said that the swords do that when relocated. He said give it two to three weeks. I don't know how accurate that is though.

Yes, the Anubias. Sorry to say but you may need to pull them and rinse them under some running water to get that off. Hopefully someone may have a less intrusive approach.

We talked about your swords posts ago.

Well if it comes to that then I'll do that. Anyone care to chime in on the swords.

I've got the same problem with my sword. Good growth but brown spots on a few leaves. I'm waiting for new growth before I trim the spotty ones.

How you long have you been waiting though. I've been waiting three weeks today. A couple of my anubiases leaves are starting to yellow. I'm trying not to freak out, but I feel like I'm losing this battle with the plants. I really want a planted tank and I thought I did a sufficient amount of research, but obviously I didn't. If all my plants die and my fish pass then I'm getting rid of the flourite. It's caused me nothing but trouble. Can anyone recommend a better substrate for plants aside from sand? Cost isn't really an issue. Also I was thinking maybe they aren't getting enough light. I know I need to clean the brown stuff off of the leaves, but if I uproot the plants and then plant them again it will just end up back on them.

I have the same issue with an anubias plant in my tank as well. I initially thought it was substrate but it wasnt. So i took it out and rinsed it and put it back in without any ill effects. But its back again. Im thinking about trimming the "infected" leaves.

Well what you're experiencing sounds like algae. That's not my problem. Mine is definitely from the substrate. Which is why I'm looking for some better stuff. Anyone have any input on this and the things I mentioned above?

"Waiting three weeks" is no time at all in a planted tank, esp. with the plants you have. You have slow growing plants that need an adjustment period before thy start to grow well. Yes leaves are going to yellow and die, your probably going to have some issues with algae BUT you gotta give it some time, you gotta have some patience. Changing substrate or lighting is not the answer, it's just going to put you right back to square one in terms of having your plants trying to readjust all over again.

I suggest you add some fast growing stem plants to help you get through this adjustment period and most of all be patient!!

Okay thank you for the response. What stem plants would you suggest for my setup? I'll take a look at them and see if I like them. I'm not in a rush for them to grow. I just don't want them to die that's all.
