Pit Bull bans...WTF?

From the CNN article: They said there was not enough information to determine which breeds are most likely to bite.
In 15 years there were 279 documented deaths by dogs. That is less than 20/yr.
Not enough info to determine which breeds are most likely, but enough to determine pit bulls and rottweilers (Which I always considered just as bad) account for more than 50% fatalities. Not "Very insignificant amounts compared to other dogs".
Heck, if "Other dogs" were the most responsible they would be outlawing ALL dogs or NO dogs. But nope, Pit Bulls and Rottwilers are the main cause thus they are getting rid of them in CO. Smart move IMO. I know some people here in Okla are adopting Pit Bulls (None near me thank goodness) from CO.

And yes, all animals retain some instinct. But dogs, cats, etc. are "domesticated":
To adopt or make fit for domestic use or life.
Well, they claim PIt Bulls are domesticated but they still attack.
They claim horses are domesticated but they still attack.
They claim several different types are domesticated.

My point? "Domesticated" does not mean safe. It means Safer, but not safe.

You know going by your definition of domestication "Make use of animals to humans".
Siegfried and Roy domesticated their tigers.
Treadwell domesticated his bear.

Here is how I see it.
You can domesticate a wild animal. They still have that "wild" instinct in them no matter what way you look at it.
I have two Daschunds. They are nice little dogs but if they get into a fight about food boy howdy, look out. They are what you call "domesticated". But animals will never be trained to do exactly what we want them to do (In other words, not bite).

Sure you might have a good natured dog that doesn't hurt a fly, like mine. They are still dogs and you just need to realize that.

People know Pit Bulls are looked down on and not thought good things of. So why do they get them? The risk involved is too much. Stick with a better breed and have less problems with possible bits, the law, and neighbors. Also keeps you out of possible legal trouble.

This argument could go round and round for ever...I have made my position pretty clear, as have others...Any respectible dog trainer will tell you, No child under ten should be left alone with ANY dog. Period. Children might as well be a foreign species when it comes to dogs perceiving their intentions..Children are generally at eye level ( a no-no) Children move quickly and without provocation (particularily bad around nervous dogs) Children will pick up toys, get into the food bowl etc...This could provoke an attack...Most dog bites come from females, most often with litters. Most bites are also inflicted by a family pet, not a strange dog...My father was a breeder and Kennel master for 35 years and i was taught at a very young age about dogs and how to behave around them...UNFORTUATELY viscious dogs have become somewhat "chic", and the rest of us that know to steer clear of them are at the mercy of the idot with the wallet chain...The easiest solution is OVER 20 LBS in PUBLIC, MUST BE MUZZLED...No "breed profiling", no guess work, just simple logic.

God joe, you can lighten up any debate/argument/whathaveyou :) How about muzzle all dogs, where do you get 20 lbs as opposed to 21 or 19.5? And if all dogs over that were muzzled you'd start getting statistics saying dogs over 10 pounds cause more bites than dogs under 10 pounds or vice versa. What if your dog is usually 19.5 lbs, but today ate an extra large breakfast? You would have to weigh it every tim you left the house to see if it needed a muzzle or not. And don't bring any dog treats on your walk, it may push it over the limit.

Actually our dogs have never been around little children before.
Any time a kid comes over they either run and hide (One of them does) the other one wants to play. But of course, the one that plays eventually wants to quit but the kid doesnt and eventually the dog gets mad.

Now, I had one of the dogs in my arms at the neighbors house one time and some little kids walked up and she acted like she was going to rip their arms off (she was barking really viciously). She got a spanking and went home :)

So obviously we either send the dogs outside to the back yard when kids come over, or just dont let them around them.

Just in case you dont know, Weenie dogs were bred to flush out badgers. They were actually bred to chase them down their holes, thats why they are so short and have big lungs.

Now, if a weenie dog can make a badger back down, you know they are pretty tough little dogs. And they just weigh 10-15 pounds.

Heck, I have heard stories of weenie dogs chasing labs away from their dog food bowls before. Not only that I had someone tell me they saw a weenie dog kill a badger one time.

And just at 15 pounds or so????

No dogs around children is a good idea no matter what size dog it is.

All I have to say is that I hope they outlaw cars soon, over forty thousand people died in car accidents last year in the US.

lol

Seriously though I see both sides of the arguments, there are carless pit bull owners(most of them I suspect being thugs who may keep the dogs in abandoned apartments for days, not feed it, teach it to fight, etc. let's not forget that if they did this will any other breed and other breeds were mistreated/crossbred/inbred I think you'd see more of the other breeds lashing out) And there are also ignorant parents and people in general who say hey there's a dog, there lets go pet it like the world is a petting zoo..

Rottweilers seemed to develope a bad reputation in the 80's as well as Dobies also. Thank god you don't hear to many things about those breeds anymore because I do believe that they are good breeds as well. Akita's are also known to be "mean" as well as chow-chows but it doesn't mean we should euthenize them all and do away with them.

And while pitbulls and other breeds have been "domesticated" for who knows how many years, lets not forget that they weren't domesticated to be just companions as in the old days you needed a dog to serve a purpose whether to guard(rottweilers were used to guard money), rat , or hunt taking down large animals, etc and unfortunately pit bulls were used for a very aggressive domesticated purpose..

Newfoundlands were breed to rescue and as water dogs. Now even if you don't teach a Newfoundland to rescue they have the given instinct already. Same thing with retrievers, etc. So technically they are domesticated but that purpose that they were bred to serve is still in thier genes.

Whoever said it first is right, this argument isn't ending anytime soon.

I don't know about your weenie dog, but my weenie dog is a good dog! She is only 7 pounds...

Anyting under 20 lbs is not going to kill you...Yes, it can bite, but not seriously maul. Make it 30 lbs if you want, just a benchmark...

Pitbulls range from 22 pounds to 110 pounds.. So making it 30lbs might not solve anything. Not mention most dogs can get out of muzzles very easily.
