Pit Bull bans...WTF?

This dog would approach you and take being petted, then his ears would lie down and he'd begin that backwards look that is typical of a dog that is getting ready to bite. It was almost like the dog would seek affection, then kind of turn a little bit. This dog was from a shelter, so there is no telling what was going on. Personally, I didn't like this particular dog, but as I said before, it was a shelter dog (don't read this the wrong way- if any dog needs discipline and structure, it's a shelter dog) and the only RR I've been around, so the jury is out until I've been around more. To me it was just odd behavior.

Wow very old thread but found this when I was searching to see what kind of dogs everyone has. I have one or two things to say....

As said, people(children included) need to be more cautious around dogs and not think just because they see one, no matter what breed that it's a friendly family dog. I think america has progressed to far into a country that is sheltered and thinks everything is mcdonalds happy meals and a family with 2.5 kids and no poverty. People have lost touch with reality. Most dogs have been domesticated for hundreds of years and I'm almost sure people back then in the old country would be less likely to approach a dog when they came across it.

Also I have a 1 year old female great dane.. The reason I bought her, I simply love the breed and wanted a dog that discouraged anyone thinking about getting close to my house. Many people may think I got the dog for the wrong reason but it's my right(one of my last few in this country) and lets not forget that most dogs(except the toy group) were breed for a purpose other than a companion...

That being said I take my dog for walks all the time, I have had numerous kids want to pet her and have to say "no"...(Meanwhile she's growling and barking, seriously do these kids think?) She dislikes female humans alot, especially teenagers. I've had her since she was 7 weeks and that's just her personality. If one gets within 100 feet she gets very protective with growling/barking/etc. People probably think she's a vicous dog and are probably scared sh$tless that I have her in the neighborhood around their kids. Many people are so ignorant they probably don't recognize her breed and think she's a HUGE pit. Would she ever bite someone? I doubt it unless harm was done to her but the way she acts you'd think she was a killer. I feel when I walk her it's my responsibility to keep hold of her and keep her fenced in when outside but she is a dog and no two have the same personalitys. But then yes even your yellow lab down the street is going to protect it's owner and itself at all costs if it feels harm. It's in EVERY dogs personality..

I think people need to understand that all dogs can do harm, my g/f was bite by a yorkshire terrier when she was younger... why isn't there a ban?

Can pitbulls kill you if biten? Sure, but it goes without saying if your neighbor has a pit bull you should warn your children to keep their distance, etc. Don't hold it against them that their toughness and thinking their 10ft tall was breed into them. Use common sense both as a pedestrian and a owner. I also agree that I think there should be liscenses required to make things legit and try to keep them out of the hands of thugs. That's why thugs buy them, because they're so populated everywhere and tons of people breeding them they can get them cheap. That is why you don't see thugs with great danes, mastiffs etc.. No thug pays $1500.00 for dog and thats why dogs of this type are kept at high prices so they don't fall into the wrong hands.

How many people are killed by guns every year? vs. pitbulls? Are we banning ALL guns? Would you go running up to a person with a gun? Like it's been said before guns don't kill people, people kill people.. And pitbulls don't wake up in the morning wanting to kill anyone... Bad owners, and people who may approach a pitbull or other dog making a bad judgement call is what kills people..

All said I almost adopted a 10 week old pit from the spca before I got my dane.. Decided against it, but I love the breed in general and think things get out of hand with people confusing bad owners/stupid people with a bad breed..

good post, Oscar... one inconsistency though, most toy breeds were also bred for purposes other than being just a companion animal. Some were, of course, but not all or most.

my .02

My city recently introduced a by law regarding pitbulls...Personally I could care less, I think they are a useless "breed", but the must have accessory for every idot with a wallet chain and a dollar store bag...Anywho, you can still own one, however it must be sterilized and muzzled in public...There has been some question over identifying what is/isnt a pit bull...Interesting animal husbandry practices have developed a wide range of "breed standard"...Whatever that is when it comes to these dogs... Personally I think all dogs over 20 lbs should be muzzled in public. That would end the identity problem right there. My brother thought it was a great idea to own one of these dogs...That is until it got out of the yard and gave a kid 150 stiches...Nice fine (5000) and a nice ongoing lawsuit.

Also, Oscar, you can't really compare a dog to a gun... A dog CAN go off and kill someone on it's own, a gun cannot.

I don't own a pit bull and I don't know anyone who does, so the bans don't really affect me, but as an update, here in Denver, the pit bull ban has forced many people to give their dogs to people in Aurora... Now Aurora is considering their own ban because there have been two recent pit bull attacks. Both of these attacks involved dogs who used to live in Denver, but were moved to Aurora after the ban.

Apparently, now Aurora doesn't want them either!

2 pit bulls were just shot in the Detroit area today. They were lose and reportedly one had bitten a kid. The city the dogs were in has no animal control officers, so regular police have to handle the situation. Apparently the dogs became aggressive when approached, so the cops opened fire  !!

I have neighbors who let their kids run the neighborhood (I mean 4 years old and under) and have came across them at my fence, trying to reach through and pet my dogs. Now, if they get bitten, even though I have a sign up warning of the dogs and have them fenced, who is to blame?!?! Probably me somehow, when the ones who need to be punished are the careless parents. They have had their house up for sale for a couple of months now, I just want these people gone!! Ok, rant over :o

Actually they started this pit bull thing beginning of spring. It has been going on quite a while.

actually, the statistics show that pits are responsible for a very small margin of bites and attacks on humans...guess what?
I sure would like to SEE these stats you are talking about.

Cocker spaniels and labrador retrievers have the most bites on record.
Again, lets see the proof.

They are people for lack of a better term,
They are not people. There are differences (other than physical) that set humans apart from the animals. An animal... is an animal. I am not saying they dont have emotions, but they do not possess the emotions, feelings that we do. Also another thing that sets us apart from the animals is a little thing called a "soul". Animals do not have one but humans do.

Actually, pit bulls are proven to be more aggressive. Its in their breed. True, all dogs come from the same vicious family, but they have been domesticated.

Its just like having a lion. Remember all those stories about all these wild animals? "Awww, I raised it since it was a puppy. It wont hurt a fly"
They dont say that anymore AFTER it mauls them. Take Sigfried and Roy for example. Lots of speculation on that one but what do you REALLY think happened?

I dont know if you know about the guy with the bear, I forget his name. I think its Treadwell or something like that. Anyway he raised this Kodiak bear (A HUGE Grizzly species) and he starred in tons of movies. Just about any movie you see with a bear in it (Exception movies made 2-3 years to present) that bear was the one in it. He played with his handler and was a really nice bear for many years. But one day it attacked him. Mauled and killed him. His trainer for many many years.

My point is, if you take a wild animal it will still have that instinct in the back of its mind. I dont care what the heck you say it still will have it. Look at all these trainers who claim that same thing you do.

THAT is the reason why they are taking pit bulls away. Too much of a danger. They would much rather get rid of pit bulls than risk even more deaths of humans.

A plus side for pit bull owners, though, is to adopt. If you can find someone in a state that allows pit pulls, they will alow you to give them the pit bull and they wont hurt it.

Oh, and if you want some statistics follow the following link. Pit Bulls and Rottweilers account for more than half. They have good reason to be removing pit bulls. In case you dont know rottweilers are also on their removal list.

There is another thread posted by labont, methinks, that has the stats. It is true very few people get bitten by pitbuls as opposed to most other breeds. The problem is thier bites are more damaging, so they get into the papers more often. I'll go try to find the link.
edit, here it is.

This is a black or white no gray area thing here. Not much use arguing it any further. Both sides have good pionts but there is no room for compramise on either side.

From that same CNN article: "They said there was not enough information to determine which breeds are most likely to bite....The numbers highlight widespread mistreatment of dogs and public ignorance of how to behave around them, the researchers said. They blamed adults for not teaching children to stay away from unfamiliar dogs". In 19 years there were 238 documented deaths by dogs. That is less than 13/yr.

And yes, all animals retain some instinct. But dogs, cats, etc. are "domesticated":
To adopt or make fit for domestic use or life.
To train or adapt (an animal or plant) to live in a human environment and be of use to humans.
Bears, tigers, etc. have not been bred for thousands of years to be around and of service to humans. You can't compare a tiger to a german shepard

All I have to say is that I hope they outlaw cars soon, over forty thousand people died in car accidents last year in the US.
