That they are. I ended up not just getting giant bettas but also another betta. Still waiting for the other to come in.
Problems with shipping fish?

I coined the term about 20 years ago and me and my friends used it back in the day, but as we've went our separate ways I haven't had anyone to talk fish with, so I haven't used it. I did use it on this site way back when, but it never really took.

I just had a fish delivered today. It was shipped out yesterday at 530p and arrived at 1015am today. It was in a styrofoam lined box and the bag was wrapped in thick insulating paper with 3 heat packs taped to the styrofoam top and a piece of media sponge in the bag. The fish is in a QT and is already active and curious.
Like I said, people who know how to ship fish usually have them arrive alive even when delayed some. And good sjippers always make good on DOAs. The problem is often on the buyers end because the cost of shipping fast is not cheap. So as buyers we find it hard to buy say $200 worth of fish and then have to pay over $100 to get them overnight. My rule of thumb has always been, "Fill the box!" when you order fish shipped.
The fastest way to have fish shipped is airport to airport. I used to do that. I would arrange for flights to arrive about 10-11 pm. I did this because the drive from where I live to NYC airports during most hours is up to 2 hours each way, At that time of night I do it in about 40 minutes. This shipping methids is also usually the least expensive. However, since the problem with terrorism loomed, one needs to register with the airlines to drop and usually to pick-upget shipments. That didn't apply when I was doing this. Also, Covid has put a dent in the number of flights as well as the excess space available in cargo holds,. So this is a consideration these days. It has also affected all of the other potential shippers as well.

The fish I'm waiting on shipped today. They're just gold barbs. Nothing special, just something I can't find locally w/ out having a LFS order them. Like I say, I placed this order w/ the same outfit I got my weather loaches from because they were so great with them.
Even my first order of frozen solid gold barbs was packed and wrapped in a maybe 10"x"10" box that was lined with ~1" styrofoam with a 72hr heatpack. Unfortunately it would have taken a lot more than that to survive the 6 days they were in transit w/ most of that time being in sub-freezing ambient temps.
The seller told me he has the least issues with FedEx and said that his problems with them are about 1 in 10 vs the USPS, so apparently the issue I had was rare.

Ya six days below freezing is never going to end well, glad they sent you replacement fish ?. The main point of my post today was to show how the timeframe of overnight shipments usually look. . I know Covid has changed things a little tho. But that timeframe is how every overnight shipment I’ve had has gone. One cool thing was I was sent a tracker one hour ahead of time that showed a map with the drivers location in real time.
The fish I got is a 5 star general- hemichromis frempongi. I’ll try to get some pics up soon, we also got a 9 week old puppy last week and he’s really keeping me busy today lol
I usually select overnight, but it depends on the value of the fish and more importantly the location of the seller. For example I live in AZ, so if the fish is coming from Southern CA in April, I’ll select the cheapest option.
