Snails not coming out of shell?

can you put another snail in and see if it reacts the same? Then you will know if you need a little tank for them

I put these guys in a week apart, and each reacted the same way. They explore for a day, then shut themselves in.

My community tank is currently being treated with heat and salt for Ich. I don't have anywhere else for them to go.

I just don't understand what the problem is. The water is fine! There is no cause for their behavior.

I DID have a bit of a planaria outbreak during my first fry rearing, but they seem to have died off. There are also tiny little white specks that dart around the tank. Not sure what they are...could this be the cause?

I did a quick search and read because I had similar issue with my snails - also with the planaria and round worms, and everything I read says that these do not harm snails except in that they can seriously affect water quality. Which you know is fine (as as mine). Any possibility of copper in your pipes?

The more I re-read your thread the more it sounds like just what happened to me - Msjinkzd and I were beside ourselves trying to figure out what the problem was - I also lost quite a few blue pearl shrimp in that same tank (same shipment). Makes me wonder if there is something so different in our water as compared to hers that the snails can't adjust. I just ordered more -- so I guess I'll see if I have the same problem. I also know that my tank, although it was cycled, wasn't very mature.

They were fine in my community tank, so it couldn't be copper. I removed them to the fry tank to start adding salt to the community tank to treat for Ich.

This is also cycled but young, as I just set it up around a month ago as a fry tank. I have another shipment of brig snails coming from a different source, so it may just be that MisJ keeps her snails in such pristine conditions that they couldn't adjust to the fry tank. But that may not explain why they got along alright in my community tank...

Arrrgh. SO frustrating. Are they better off in the fry tank, or in the community tank with 2tsp/gal of salt?

I don't think snails do well with salt. You said the tank was just set up a month ago - was it brand new? The other thing was that I had just re-sealed mine with silicone (not treated with anything - triple checked that), but I know that new silicon leaches silica into the tank - I had a major diatom bloom. If your's is new maybe something like that could be the answer.

No, it is not new. I had it set up for over a year, broke it down to upgrade to my current 20g community tank, and then recently set it back up to use it as a fry tank for my peacock gudgeons.

hmmm, this is perplexing. Do you have a fairly large rubbermaid type container that you could put them in and see if there's something about that tank? Slowly acclimate them that water and see what happens? I don't know if that would cause worse problems though - but maybe worth a try for a day with Prime in the water and some food to see if they'll at least try to eat? I know how frustrated you are, because there really is no apparent reason why they aren't thriving. I'm starting to get nervous about my new shipment coming.

I have a bucket that I use for water changes. I could put them in some tupperwares to see f they respond to fresh Prime-treated water. It's worth a try, otherwise they will just die in the fry tank without explanation.

I'll do it first thing in the morning.

Keep me updated - I really hope they're OK! It's past my bedtime :) Good night.
