steelerfan's 30 Gallon Breeder Journal/Build

well, i added a cleaner shrimp friday night. he's a little guy compared to most of them i have seen.

he found his little home already for his hangout.

not afraid of me as he will take a pellet from me :-)

i am starting to get the green algea and diatom bloom now, finally.

managed to get ph up a tad without adding buffer.

right around the 8 mark now.

the cheato algea in the tank is getting me agitated as i get stray pieces flying around and getting stuck in powerheads and ac 110.

i went and bought a plastic thing of tomatoes as i had planned to use the plastic container to put the cheato in.

i got the label off of it and it was pretty clean except for a little haze of the glue they use so i chickened out and didn't put it in tank.

do you think that that type of glue would hurt anything if i did put it in tank?

i'd like to find a container like that without the labels but not sure where i could get 1?

been really busy but i will try to grab some pics of "slippery pete" shortly/

Kind of pricey for what it is but it does include a PH.

The other option (and I am not going to explain this very well) is a small plastic/acrylic basket with suction cups that people use by kitchen sinks to put sponges and scrubbies in. They usually have them in the kitchen and bath sections at places like Wal-Mart.

FWIW, I wouldn't put anything thing with that glue on it in my tank either :)

thanks for link greech,

since i am trying to hide the cheato behind rock on bottom, thinking the soap dish and refuge wouldn't work at containing cheato.

the plastic clamshell container tomatos were in though would fit perfect behind a rock i got and should contain cheato and allow enough flow too.

someone said rubbing alcohol would take the little bit of left over glue off and then just give it a rinse, so i will try that.

Ah, gotcha. I was thinking of those little green tomato baskets and missed the "clam shell" part. The rubbing alcohol should work ok as it will evaporate pretty quickly.

i am not sure, but i believe my green algae and diatom bloom may be starting :-)

and i am happy to present to you "slippery pete"

hoping by the end of may or so i can be through with the disgusting look just in time to start actually buying from divers den instead of stalking it...

I'd wanna do something like that with my 29. I like the arches and the neat caves. Thanks for the inspiration :)

Completely missed your earlier mention of getting the cleaner shrimp. Very cool little characters. Love mine.

I also just saw your question about alkalinity. What is your SG? Have you tested for alk again since? Are you using an API test kit? If so mine ALWAYS tests low. My LFS has salifert and elos tests and my alk is typically 1.5 higher when measured with those kits. There is nothing in the tank to consume anything to drop it from the 7s and I just tested a batch of my neo marine at a SG of 1.025 and this is what I got...

Mg = 1340
Ca = 360
Alk = 9.5 dkh

I am just starting to have issue with water parameters and I am trying to sort through the dosing and all now. Definitely not the best person to ask so maybe someone else can help out or check the reef chemistry section over on reef central. Randy is a great mod over there and is very helpful. I really think you should do another test and have your LFS double check your numbers for you.

yeah greech,

little guy is cool.

i have been giving him a formula 2 pellet every other day, as putting a few more in there for the nas snails.

wife loves the little shrimp.

my alk is around 8 now and ph is 8.2.

i think since it is just a new tank i am going through the process until things level off.

think i am scrapping the cheato for now.

woke up this morning and 1 ball had broken apart and blown everywhere.

i also woke up to see my tank real cloudy. i have what looks like pollen blowing around.

looks like the diatoms from the sand.

i am assuming the algae is going crazy.

just took testing parameters and are as follows:

temp 76
alk 8
ph 8.2
amm-0
trite-0
trate-0
sg 1.024
phos showing 0 but i think that's cause all the algae is eating it :-)

doing a 10% wc of 3 gallons from here on out until i actually get some fish as i am not sure the 5 would do any better than the 3 right now?

what kind of problems are you having with your water?

how's the wrasse?
