steelerfan's 30 Gallon Breeder Journal/Build

Hmmm.. interesting.. you could get a bottle of that Dr. Tim's bacteria to dose right after treatment is done to put the nitrifying bacteria back in the tank. When I dosed for the first time after reading Melev's link I was expecting the worst for the inverts in the tank, after all, the red bugs are inverts as well.. but suprisingly after 3 back to back doses per instructions there were 0 red bugs left and very minimal loss of snails (no crabs in the tank, but if the snails made it I would think crabs would as well). I think shrimp must be taken out though, I don't think they will make it at all.

Agreed. Ok, after reading this 12 page thread I think I'm gonna treat the whole tank and take out the shrimp (if I can catch him). Sorry steeler, should have started my own thread by now but hopefully it helps everyone reading :)

like i said greech, no bother at all.

good luck treating tank.

like i said, the guy local to me treated interceptor with his cleaner and coral banded and both were fine, but i would probably try to put mine somewhere else as well.

god, i hope it works out well for ya.

wondering if i have a bacteria bloom going on?

hard to describe but i have an almost diatom color haze blowing around my tank for last 2days.
did water change lastnight and still hasn't helped.

my water tests fine as far as the biggies go and my snails and cleaner shrimp all seem fine.

just wondering if there is anything i should do if it is a bacteria bloom ?

Thinking its your diatom frustules getting blown around by the tunzes. Normally that kind of debris gets removed via surface skimmers as it collects on the surface but your tunzes are probably keeping the surface pretty well agitated and your aquaclear just done't have the umph to collect them quick enough. Not saying this is what you have going on but I experienced something similar until I added the surface skimmer attachment (which I know is ugly!). If you haven't completely cleaned out your aquaclear that may also help too. A lot of crap settles under that media basket.

ok greech,

yeah it's like there is a smokey haze coming off the sand bed but wasn't sure diatoms moved from sand.

my surface stays pretty much agitaed all the time, so i hope you are right and the diatoms die off in a few weeks.

i do clean my ac110 weekly BTW.

was gonna do monthly, but what is an extra 10 minutes in the sceme of things.

thanks again man.

BTW, saw a perfect flame angel on dd tonight.

it is so frustrating...

If you build it the fish will come :).

ok,

did a lights out yesterday and planning on today as well.

below will be a pic of what i am dealing with.

testing today is 0/0/0 ph 7.8 (thinking cause lights out and morning. was 8.2 b4) sg 1.024 temp 75-76

this is the haze i am talking about which lasts all day, but for some reason the last 2 days when i have viewed tank and topped off at midnight when i get home from work, the tank is clear and is like beloe all day after that.

any help appreciated.

not sure what is going on

Is your glass covered as well? in other words does it still look like that when your glass is freshly cleaned? It looks like some of the gren algae is cleaning up. You sand looks surprisingly clean too. I think you said you were running Polyfilter pad. If so what color is the pad when you replace it?

It does look like a bacteria bloom but honetsly I'm a bit stumped. With your numbers the way they are and no impacts to livestock the good news is I don't think it is anything you need to be too concerned with and it will clear up eventually. Keep runing the Poly and run carbon and GFO too (can't hurt). Just don't overdue the amount of carbon and GFO you use.

Interested to see what the folks over on RC would have to say.

After doing some looking around I really think a bacterial bloom is what you have going on. Best thing to do from what I read is keep feeding to a minimum (know you're not feeding much) and make sure your water is aerated as the blooms can take up much of the oxygen leaving less for the larger forms of life. Other than that I didn't see any other harmful byproducts of a BB.

Definitely do some looking around yourself to confirm this but the picture and descriptions I saw just in the few minutes of searching lead me to believe a BB is the culprit here.

Also from what I read water changes aren't going to take the cloudiness away but they will obvoiusly help to remove organics so I would keep on your routine.

It sounds like blooms shouldn't last more than a few days in most cases so if it doesn't clear up I would consider a good cleaning. Knowing how much debris came in on my BRS dry rock , I would take a powerhead and move it around through the rocks to blow them out and do a good water change immediately after. Get some fresh media and mechanical filtration in your filter and be prepared to change the mechanical often. You'll likely have a ton of crud floating after this but it can't be any worse than it is now and the longer the debris stays trapped the longer this could go on.

Again, I'm not 100% on this as I have never had one myself (fresh or salt) so hopefully you'll get some more educated responses but what I suggested won't hurt anything.
