steelerfan's 30 Gallon Breeder Journal/Build

hi greech,

no bubbles on rock or sand.

not dosing anything either.

don't think anything ever got into tank and if so i would think the polyfilter would have helped.

in theory i should have had plenty of bacteria from the 2 raw shrimp i had in tank i would think.

never got a huge ammonia spike but it did go through an ammonia/nitrite/nitrate conversion.

still only have a skunk cleaner and snails in there as well a bunch of copepods so i doubt that i am taxing the system, as i only feed a few formula 2 pellets to the tank every other day.

what i don't understand is how the tank can look so crystal clear at midnight and then crudy in the morning.

i would think if i had something bad happening it would be constant.

testing all appears good with only issue is ph at 7.8 in the morning going up to 8.2 or so later on.

diatoms are gone, green algae is fading and hair algae is not super crazy at all but present and i assume just part of the new tank thing i have to go through, but i would have thought a bacterial thing would have been done?

I'm stumped. Are you dosing anything at all? 2-part?

Are you still seeing bubbles on the rocks, sand?

Did anything ever get into the tank?

Do you think this is a byproduct of having zero bacteria in the tank to start with? You never really saw a spike and now this? Maybe add a really nice piece of well cured live rock?

Well you got me. I know the shrimp should have done the trick, just trying to cover all bases.

Diatoms do show up more when lights are on so it could just be a really bad boom or the bacteria. Sounds like the tank is healthy otherwise. Hopefully it clears up soon.

yeah, i got me too :-)

i hear that inverts are sensitive to bad water and they all seem fine so that's a plus.

i just hope it runs it's course soon.

i would like to have a tank like yours someday...

Any updates on your tank? I hope it is going well! How about more pictures!!!

hi benson,

tank is back to just a slight haze and the small amount of hair algae i have is getting smaller yet so i hope i am on the right track.

just think the fact that i didn't use liverock and i didn't cure the dryrock is just delaying my process a little bit which i am fine with.

wife is replacing carpet in june so after that i plan to be on the lookout for my first fish purchase.

thanks for checking in.

i hope you are right about the rock bud.

looking at getting a red spotted blenny, some type of picasso clown, flame angel and maybe 1 other fish

did a 10 gallon water change today and took all rock out and put in the old 10 gallons of tank water and went over them with a powerhead to try to get the junk out.

got a lot out, but not all.

will have to empty tank hopefully for last time in 1-2 nd week of june as new carpet is going in.

from there i will be looking to finally buy a fish for the qt.

Good that you did that. I recent started using a PH instead of a turkey baster to blow off the rocks with each water change. Works much better and is a lot quicker. Might want to do that again when you move the tank. Look forward to seeing it set back up after the carpet's in.

thanks greech,

here's a question, and i'm wondering if i am the moron who is causing the "bloom" issues.

every water change i do i make it a point to stir the sandbed and siphon it out on the very top.

i see some posts where people do this and others where people say don't disturb the sandbed.

i always assumed the don't disturb the sandbed was if it was a deep 1 and since i have only maybe 1.5-2 inches that i should suction it out when i do water changes.

it seems like after i do this though i get that haze and bacterial thing.

wondering if this is my problem?
