Stocking a 10g tank

The guy was talking about some sort of shrimp. I might get those in a month or two when the tank is ready and can actually keep them alive. I might just get 2 more guppies and 3 more neons. For a total of 4 guppies and 6 neons. Then later get the shrimp and thats that.

you could probably do ghost shrimp. maybe red cherry shrimp.

I know they werent ghost shrimp. I think they were red and a little bit bigger than ghost shrimp (or at least the ones I have seen). But they dont get too big.

personally i wouldn't do ghost shrimp. dunno if he'd wind up with brackish shrimp (some say there's an identical brackish species, i dunno) and those buggers go hunting IME. likely to get one of the guppies at night. there's also the likelyhood of mass die-offs like otos. that's my experience and understanding. i do know that amanos and otos long outlived my ghost shrimp back in the day, though.

i probably wouldn't do "apple" snails either. they're big waste machines and can get pretty large. not good for someone having a hard time wanting extra species without overstocking a small tank all while being a noob.

amano shrimp... sure. red cherries... you bet... but i wouldn't expect their numbers to grow. tiger shrimp... why not. sulawesi shrimp and snails... yeah... i'd do that. ramshorn snails... if they're colored... and only of one color... absolutely! blue, red, orange, whatever... pick a color, or get what you can get in the marketplace here that's not brown. trumpet snails... you betcha! rudolph shrimp... so cool... awesome antics... same "glass" body, but this freakishly cool red rostrum.

plus... everything i listed should be fairly to extremely low on the bio load (so if they say reproduce to dozens, it's not going to hurt anything), mostly all could be considered part of a "cleanup crew" and should be fairly easy to care for. (as always... definitely be sure to double check exact species information.) i will reiterate, though that checking msj, mg and the marketplace here will net you stellar stock at a phenomenal price in most cases.

If they are fairly large shrimp, make sure its a cherry shrimp and not bamboo shrimp. Bamboo shrimp would be too hard to maintain in a 10g as they are filter feeders and need very well established tanks.

Sounds good. I will go have them test the water (Probably not ready) and look around at the types of shrimp.

definitely make note. clear pics or vids are handy too in case the species name is incorrect or just some random name slapped on a tank. (you'd be surprised how often that happens, although i'd suspect less often in fresh tanks than salty.)

remember, you want minimum ammo (0), nitrite (0) and nitrate (above 0) readings. be insistent upon that since you're cycling. if you get more readings, great... record them. ;)

Didnt think of the vid or pics. Will do that for sure. This place seems to be much more organized with their fish than any other pet shop I have been in. Clear pricing and the type of fish. Only problem is no pic :( But I will defiantly be asking about them to make sure.

nitrate, need to remember that! I keep mixing the two up.

Ok, just go back from the birds and best pet store. They tried to sell me on the undergravel filters. But for the cost (about $70 after power head and plate) I dont see it worth it. I can get a second tetra pf10 for <$15. Only reason I say that filter is because the bio bags are $1.40 each and it is convenient to only need 1 type of cartridge.

Anyway, I was shocked to see that all of the levels turned out good. But she wanted to be on the safe side anyway. We got some "starter fish" that look cool. I dont remember what they are. Some type of neon and then a different fish. After they are accumulated to the temp and I release them I will post pics. In 4 weeks we can bring the fish back for store credit and get more neons and a guppy or two.

As for the shrimp, the one I remember and looked at again today just looked like a big ghost shrimp. it was an, "algae eater shrimp" according to their label.

As for the fish in cycling, I double checked the ammo and nitrites levels. <1 ppm. So hopefully they dont get harmed too bad if they do at all. It was a full chemical test with the api test kit. I know it is just a hobby kit but better than test strips.

I personally probably wouldnt have walked out with the fish, but my mom made me and she paid for them. I guess we were there for an hour looking around (so much more stuff than petco) and she doesnt like an empty fish tank just sitting around.

edit: got a message from mgammer and it basically said. Get a bunch of neons. Not sure if it means just neon tetras or other types too?

Oh, also I didnt see any of the loaches there except for some sort of saltwater thing that looked to be the same but lives in saltwater. I didnt look at the name though. Granted, they could be burrowed or "inspecting" the under gravel filters they use at that pet shop.
