Sunlight’s tank journal

An update on baby frog! I am beginning to think that I see glands behind the armpits forming, meaning that it is a male. I'm not completely positive yet, though! Anyways, he is darkening up more and ate directly from my turkey baster for the first time tonight!! He is also getting really good at finding food around the tank. Although he is growing like a weed, I don't think he will be large enough for blood worms for a little while. Unless I chop them up really tiny, which would be really hard. So for now, his only foods are frozen brine shrimp (main food) supplemented with Hikari shrimp pellets every now and again. They have to be softened up a little before I give it to him, though. That way he can bite off chunks of it easily. Anywho, I think I'm in love <3

Another related topic is what I'm going to do when I go on vacation for all of next week. I am considering putting baby frog into a 1 gallon jar (with leaves and floating plants and tannins to make sure he is comfortable) and bringing him with me to make sure he eats. I don't trust any of the people who will be taking care of our pets enough to feed him properly. Reggie is easy and can just be fed only pellets that week, so he will be fine to stay home. However, because baby frog is getting better at finding food thrown around the tank, he might be okay... He is just so skinny that I'm afraid of what might happen if he misses too many meals. Thoughts? Should I take him with me or leave him? Keep in mind that I'd be doing partial water changes in the jar every day and that he is about half the size of a regular African dwarf frog. And it would only be for about 5-6 days.

Well, if it's driving vacation maybe he'd like a trip! You'll need to know if the water is similar to your home or bring a couple gallons of it in case it's not & a siphon or something to WC. A gallon jar is so much smaller you'll need to be on your A game, either testing or just changing water often. Bringing pets can be a PITA, you can't just "have fun" away from home. I've brought pets only a couple times, mostly a good experience but not always...You still want to have fun!

If he wasn't so new & young I'd for vote leaving him home (I have no frog experience). You could also just have the petsitter feed a very measured amount of food every other day & do a water change when you get home. Be very clear: 1 pellet or whatever every 2 days. I used to leave little cups of food for each tank. I truly don't think 5 or 6 days (3? feeds) would stunt him or hurt him but it's a judgement call.

Oh I'd definitely feel 100% comfortable leaving him if he wasn't so new and young. I think I'm going to see how tonight's feeding goes and make my final decision then. I will just have to make sure that whoever is taking care of our animals on the days baby frog eats knows 100% how to feed him. I'll portion out the brine shrimp and pellets and make a chart for them to follow.

We are leaving tomorrow, the house we are staying at is only about 45 minutes away so I can make emergency trips home if need be. I'll do a big water change today to make sure the water quality stays nice while I'm gone and then hope for the best ? I just know I'll be very nervous leaving him in the hands of people with zero experience. I'll ask for pictures and stuff during feedings to make sure he looks okay. :)

As for why I'm worried about him missing feedings, it's because he is very young and skinny so he needs to target-fed a lot (huge helpings every other day) and I'm worried he will become malnourished or starve if he misses too many feedings

Nevermind! I decided to go ahead and jar him. My mom told me that we will be staying there for longer than we thought (over a week now) and then reminded me how difficult it can be to feed baby frog (and combined with all of our other pets' needs, will be a hard task for our pet sitters to do) So I went ahead and cleaned out my dead terrarium jar, filled it with half tank water and half fresh water, added leaves, tannins, and floating plants, and put baby frog in it. He looks so tiny in there! But he doesn't seem too stressed out. He will have a day and night to settle and let me observe his behavior in there. Then we leave tomorrow!

Baby frog goes to the beach!

Good luck! & don't forget a gal. or 2 of "home" water, siphon & foods for him.

I forget, when might your other new frog show up?

Have a fun trip!
Thank you so much!! I have a gallon of dechlorinated “home” water, airline tubing to siphon, a turkey baster to target feed, a couple different sized cups, prime (just in case), and his food!

I did the math, I will be feeding 4 times throughout the trip so I will do 4 25% water changes the mornings after I feed him (since I only have a gallon of home water). Frogs don’t produce much waste, so this should be fine. Most waste will be from leftover food, which I’ll take out the mornings after he eats!

As for the car rides, I’ll be wrapping his jar in a towel and leaving it on my lap for the whole time :)

Wish us luck!!
