SUNSUN HW-302 Outside Filter setup & test

Id congratulate you but Im a little upset you bought my bargain FX5 on ebay that I have been checking almost every day but apparently missed . But there always another deal out there.;) Hope it is in good working order, as with all used filters there is always a chance something is not working, on FX5's some new owners have a tendency to over-tighten the lugs and tear out the anchors or warp the lid which can usually be straitened and parts replaced or someone tried an use it as a sand vac and damaged the impeller, also replacable. But mostly they need money and you get a great deal, what I hope for you congrats.:grinyes:

Oops sorry about that!! BTW someone told me that I could hook the FX5 right to the bulk heads 1 intake and 1 output. What do you think?

i have seen a few bottom drilled tanks that have a fx5 connected that way. you need to make sure your tank stand sits high enough above the filter and your flow rate should be very high. i would make a DIY spray bar and insert it into the return bulk head with holes drilled all around the pipe so you will have complete tank coverage and it all should work fine. good luck on your project and keep us posted.
and 120.00 for a FX5 in good working condition is a EXCELLENT deal !

I got my filter...Yay! I went to home depot to buy the ball valve but they did not have the same parts that you guys have. Will these parts work?

pieces.jpg The gray parts do not bend like yours do..they are just straight. The guy at home depot thinks they will be ok but I wasn't sure....let me know what you think....thank you :)

As long as the hose fits over the barb snugly and the thread go togther, you are in business.

Actually, you got what I was looking for when I set out to fit my filter with a valve.

Your valve assembly should work just fine. Be sure to use the teflon tape over the threads at leasts 2 layers will do ya. Tighten the fittings very tightly. Be careful not to strip out the threads, they are only plastic.

Best wishes,
Wes

I did it! (well with some help from my husband...there is no way I could have ever attached the hoses without him - it was way too hard). This filter is really awesome! My tank is already almost crystal clear and that being after I redecorated, which always stirs up a mess and a half. It is nice to be able to leave the filter running while doing a water change.

As for noise....well at first I thought I was hearing some bubbling...then I realized t was just my dream aquarium screen saver. :grinno: This thing makes absolutely no noise whatsoever.

I just want to thank you guys again for helping me with this...I could have never done it without you :bowing:

when i have a hose that is just a tad to small to slide up on a barb fitting , i put a coffee cup 3/4 full of water in the microwave until water is boiling then insert the end of the hose in it for about 20 seconds and the tubing become very soft. and will easily stretch and slide up on the barb and when it cools it shrinks tight and makes a very good seal then i attach a plastic hose clamp.

ok, so i have been looking for another canister filter for my 90g that is currently only running a rena xp3, but i need more filtration since my stocking has increased a little. Are these the one you guys are talking about?

What happened to the 303? Sorry for bringing an old thread back.

For a 90 gallon you already have a filter (XP3) fit for only auxiliary on a tank that size. I would not buy another aux type performer which is the Sunsun. In the engine world these stack-only filters are comparable to a V-tech 2.4. For a tank that size that is trying to tell you you need to step up to a higher performer the circumference FX5, comparable to a 5.7 Hemi engine.
