I only want a cheap canister filter for now, it will probably get thrown on my 180g in the future as extra filtration. I don't want a FX5, i would spend my money on a sump. But the canister filter have to do, till I'm completely done downsizing (14 tanks- 7 tanks:cry:). Plus the tanks only has 1 fish, and a 40% water change a week. The rena is doing a lot of Bio right now.
Back to the original question, what happened to the 303? Where can i get one with out a UV?

Kool Goods is the ebay seller that most people, including myself, have bought their Sunsun canister filter from.

The link that taralm13 posted above is a Sunsun HW-302 sold by Kool Goods, but it would appear that the product name has changed from Sunsun to Perfect, which explains why people may be having a hard time finding the Sunsun product. It looks exactly the same except the box and name are different.

Kool Goods seems to have the best price on these filters. If you click on the Kool Goods seller name, it will navigate you to a page where you can view the Kool Goods ebay store. Looking through the current stock, it doesn't look like they have a HW-304 (which I believe is the bigger model you're looking for) that doesn't also include a UV sterilizer. Right now they offer the HW-302, the HW-302 with a UV sterilizer, and the HW-304 with UV sterilizer. You could email the seller and see if they have, or are expecting, any of the larger models without the UV sterilizer or just keep an eye on their ebay page.

I'm going to be ordering 2-3 of the "SunSun/Perfect" filters from a seller called "discountaquatic" on ebay. His price is the exact same at Kool-Goods but he also includes media with the filter. He as more/better ratings then Kool-Goods. Here is the link below to a 302 I'm pretty sure, but they sell all the models as well. I'll update later when I receive my filters

Well let me add that since I started this thread the 3 stage Sunsun which cost me $58 shipped has worked flawlessly in all modes. I even have it cycling on a timer 1 hour on & 30 minutes off 24/7 and it has had no problem keeping prime between starting & stopping with no leaks and no drop in flow. This is while in service on my messy 100G Koi tank as an aux filter next to an FX5 on the same timer, and while the FX5 does the lion share of the cleaning the Sunsun still manages to capture a impressive amount of mud in its stock poly pad provided.

Using only the center basket for polishing (bottom basket lava rock & top basket bio-balls) The center basket is fitted with 1 layer of bio-ball on the bottom to hold the poly polishing pad snug against the top basket to prevent bypass. As you can see for yourself the top of the pad is 3/4% heavily laden with black waste mud while the bottom of the pad is pristine. Considering that the Sunsun water flow comes in by gravity and piped to the bottom of the bottom baskets and is then works its way back up from the bottom of all the tight fitting baskets and filter media to the lid pump back to tank without getting any of the bottom filter media dirty (only the top 3/4 deep) is a real mystery to me. All of the dirt is being captured by the top of the of the filter basket & pad in the opposite direction of flow.

In any-event one thing I do know is that for a "Stacking-Basket lid-Pump" style canister filter the Sunsun performs my Fluval 404-405 in stock configuration by a very large margin and I suspect most others in its class. The Sunsun also spills far less water when removing the valve block only a few drops compared to a puddle with my Fluval 405. Only draw back is you must be gentle handling the fragile components, no forcing of parts in assembly or disassemble.

One last comment. I have often considered buying the large 4 basket Sunsun for twice as much, but I suspect that the becasue the "small" 3 basket Sunsun is already by definition a large capacity canister filter, for twice the money your not going to get but a small amount of increased performance. Not to mention the addition power usage and water weight lugging the larger canister, and to me the impellers and pluming look the same size indicating no increase in true GPH. Having said that and not tried the larger 4 basket model, I could be completely wrong, nevertheless I think Id rather have 2 three basket models then 1 slightly larger model at twice the price.

wow..thanks for updating. I haven't opened mine up yet (planning on doing it this weekend for the 1st time). How often do you clean yours? I only have mine on a 20 gallon guppy tank so it probably won't get as dirty as your does.

Funny thing...my husband does not really like me having a fish tank but he is seriously curious about this filter and what it will look like inside....he cannot wait for me to open it up. After all the problems I had with my previous filter I dread touching this one. Seems every time I did anything to my old one it would stop working or make a huge mess in my tank due to too much flow.
