Personally I just used pure ammonia and poured it in until I got 4ppm. Easy, little smell, done.
I'd not just pinch it between the rocks because it will decompose and fall apart.

I have to say that the pure ammonia method worked well for me, although I have never used the raw shrimp method. The part where you have to remove the rotten shrimp really didn't appeal to me, although I can't imagine it would be worse than emptying the skimmer :yuck:

Ok well I did the baggy thing. I used to earth magnets to hold it on the glass. So now I just leave it in there until when?
Until you get a good ammonia spike, say 4-5ppm. This is why I just poured the pure ammonia in by the way..lol
ok, now that is just gross. I can deal with huge spiders in stands... but drinking skimmer juice...:yuck::crazy::barf:
