Sorry, I seem to be going a bit thread crazy here, but just started to get back in the game today and set up the 10 again.

I moved the betta to it along with filter media, decor, and stuff to help move the bacteria.

I was hoping he would swim around a lot like he did when he upgraded from his 1 to 5g, but he isnt. He is moving around about as much as he did in the 5g.

So, I have some options here. I STILL have that guppy in the 1g, and he flat out needs a bigger home. I was planning on moving him to the 5g tomorrow, but now that I see the betta isnt moving around as much as I though (and taking advantage of a tank twice as big) I might move the guppy back to the 10g and the betta back to the 5g.

So, if I go that rout, what other fish should I put in the 10? I am getting mystery snails for both tanks (probably 1 in the 5 and 2 in the 10?) and some sort of shrimp or something similar in one of the tanks. When I was getting supplies at petco, I noticed something along the lines of a red crayfish, but it wasnt red (like white, possibly dead?) and it looked more like a little lobster (cpo?). I WILL NOT be getting the fish at petco for sure. Their tanks were nasy and had easily 15-20 dead fish. Petsmart is a lot better, and has a better variety for sure.

I am out of school now with more time on my hands (and $) to do thing right. I will probably get a python or similar gravel vac (or build one, need to look for hose somewhere). Ordering a test kit right after this thread get posted. Something I wish I had gotten from the start.

When I know for sure that the tank is cycled and everything (should have beneficial bacteria already), what should I get to go along with my lone guppy? I had neon tetras and some sort of cory catfish but I would like to do something different. I know I want a clean up crew for sure.

I dont know if this is all of them, or if my local store even has them, but here is what petsmart says they have, or can get in stock at my local store.

Thanks so much! AC really helped me out start out, and hopefully can help me get back in the game the right way this time.

Haha I felt bad too at first because since I've joined I've been making threads like crazy but now I'm just having fun with it because no one seems bothered. I love the conversation since I don't know anyone around me into fish.

I say add a few more guppies so your guy doesn't get too lonely. I'm not sure what size cleanup you can have in there and I'm not the best when it comes to stocking yet so any suggestions I give should probably be approved by another member but maybe a clown pleco? I think those stay small or maybe an even smaller sort of pleco if there is one.

I would say endlers but I hear they're not supposed to be mixed with guppies. Maybe tiger barbs? Eh I'll probably let some other people chime in. There's been a few fish I've recommended for 10g setups lately that another member told me probably should be kept in a 20 so I don't want to give any bad advice.

Lol, I was exactly the same way with the advice when I started out. I learned the basics, but for some reason decided to defy what advice others gave me. But now I really want to do it right.

I will probably get one or two more guppies for sure. The clown pleco looks cool, but some places say they need driftwood because they benefit from stuff from it other than shelter. I dont have room for driftwood or anywhere to get it in the first place. I did see clown loaches on petsmart's site (liked above) that seemed cool, but I didnt bother to read how big they get and stuff.

Really just need to figure out clean up crew and some sort of middle ground or schooling fish that I can have a group of in the 10.

Edit: googled the clown loach, and it is def out of the question. Dont want to have a nice small fish that gets to like a foot long and needs a huge tank right when I go off to college.

There's a vendor on here who sells red cherry shrimp (rcs) for a really good price. most stores charge $2-$3 each for them, and he'll send you 20 for $24 shipped. They kind of look like mini-lobsters, and he has really good reviews on this site. They would go well with guppies, and you could split the number received between both of your tanks. I plan on getting some in a couple of weeks for Sal's tank (betta). I'll include the link to the shrimp at the end of this. I have seen the white crayfish you're talking about... they're cool. They will eat fish in your tank, though, so, they'd need a tank of their own (unless you wanted large fish, which won't go in a 10g). What about guppies, a honey gourami, cherry shrimp, and a mystery snail, and do the 10 up to be heavily planted? You'd have a nice assortment of color in there with the orange/yellow from the gourami, the red shrimp, green plants, and colorful guppies. Just a thought. :)
Here's the shrimp link: http://www.epicfish.net/

clown plecos and tiger barbs need a 20 gallon tank and clown plecos have to have wood in their diet. clown loaches need like a 125 or something. there really isnt many bottom dwellers you can do in a 10 other than pygmy corys snails and shrimp.

I have a baby bristlenose pleco in my 10g until he outgrows it, and will then move over to the 50 gallon. Plecos do need drift wood, they chew on it. You don't need a big piece for something the size of a clown pleco- I literally found a downed branch from the maple tree in my back yard about 10 inches long, and maybe 1/2 inch around with a little fork at the top, that had been stripped of all bark, and weathered- brought it in, boiled it in water for the better part of the afternoon, and it is now in my tank and doing just fine. All you need is a small branch. My pleco hangs out on it all the time. You can look for small driftwood branches on the riverbanks, too- just boil them for a bit before putting them in your tank.

Well, I plan to switch to an led lighting strip normally used in hobby grade rc applications, so I dont know how well plants will grow. Plus, I have never done live plants, and I dont keep very deep gravel. I dont like the look of deep gravel for some reason. I dont know anything about trimming plants or anything either, I imagine it being a disaster and brown nasty water with me.

Just using the crayfish as an example of their tank conditions. Nowhere did they have a sign for a white crayfish, just some red one an a pic of one that was actually red, not a fading barley visible orange/white.

I dont know exactly how I want to do the shrimp. rcs would look great with the betta in the 5g, but I dont know if he gets along with shrimp yet.

The 10g would look great with like orange, tan, and generally light colored fish. But there is a bit of color in the fake plants. The gravel is white, and various shades of brown, the decor is white and various shades of brown. But there are some areas with red/purple, and green with the fake plants.

an example of a fish that would look great is a glowlight tetra or tiger barbs. But those seem more active, and would probably be better in a bigger tank.

But, I do want some color.

Man, picking fish is hard.

A honey gourami (4") or fire red dwarf gourami (2 1/2"), a few more guppies, and a small school or neons, or maybe some von rio flame tetras? I know the von rios look lovely under lower lighting conditions and are orange/red. Or the glowlights would work, too! PetSmart also has guppies on sale for $1 this week. A bunch of different colors, including some yellow and orange ones. Maybe a few amano for the bottom feeding? They get bigger than the RCS and ghost shrimp do (around 2", I believe, and have a beefier shaped body), and are fantastic algae eaters. I don't believe PetSmart carries those, but I have seen them at PetCo.
