Ok, not quite what I was expecting between you two. I know you are both helpful, there are a lot of mixed opinions, the facts are the wood probably does help, but might not be needed to live, though some other way of providing what the wood gives them would probably be a good idea.

Off to petland to see what they have.

Ok- just spent the better part of the a.m. researching this out- from what I have read, about 6-8 articles recommend wood for ANY pleco species, as they enjoy chewing on it, and it is believed to help them with digestion- at the very least, it is just something they enjoy, which aids to their general happiness and quality of life- but some can "live" without it. About 2-3 of them said the only plecos that need driftwood are the ones that actually eat it as a food source (panaques, as AAF had mentioned). Not trying to argue with EITHER of you, or pretend that I am more knowledgeable on the subject than either of you... I'm not. I am just sharing what I read today from multiple sources, and I am sure there are MANY other members on this forum that could tell everyone the same info, and knew it before I did. So, essentially- there are some that NEED to have driftwood, but all of them will LIKE having driftwood, and do get some benefit from it. I, for one, will put it in any of my tanks with plecos, as they do like it, and I would prefer to provide things that aid in their happiness and general quality of life, whether it is essential for survival, or just enjoyed. The same reason I choose to feed fresh veggies to my fish- they can survive on prepared food alone, but, really enjoy fresh foods, so, why not just give it to them? I guess it's all just a matter of personal choice. Again- not trying to argue, make enemies, or start a war. From what I have just researched, RB is right that they do enjoy it & it does provide them some benefits, and AAF is right that it isn't necessarily essential for their bare survival. You both have loads more experience than I do- Knowledge and opinions from both of you are so strongly appreciated. Please, though, can't we all just get along? :P

Ok, got back from petland. Their tanks of larger fish were very nice, but the normal smaller fish tanks were not as well taken care of. I did notice they have cherry shrimp (rcs? or just cherry shrimp?) but they wanted $6 a piece for them. NO WAY was I going to pay that, and they werent even that red or healthy looking. I only found two in the tank that was more dirty than expected for only having shrimp in it. Other than that they had 2 or 3 of each of the more common fish like neon tetras for example. I was surprised to see that they didnt have any guppies. We were going to go to this corbins exotic place we have been to before that is really cool. They even have monkeys there and a large section of fish. I called the number and nobody answered and the answering machine was set up as lisas pet care or something like that. So maybe later this week we will head up there and check it out. Even if I dont find any fish, I know they have (or had, since I havent been there in a year or two) brine shrimp eggs. So I will be able to set those up for a snack for my betta.

So back to the tank

stocking idea so far
2-3 guppies
shrimp probably ghost at first since they are cheap and locally available
mystery snails
some sort of tetras probably a school of 3-5 or so (introduced one or two at a time?)
and if possible some sort of centerpiece fish. Doesnt have to be big, but just something a little different. Maybe a nice red color?

i think youd be better of with 6 neon tetras. maybe buy some rcs online?

I do plan to get rcs online at some point, just not yet.

So 2-3 guppies (lol typed 203 the first time)
6 neon tetras
snails, and shrimp

Could I do a centerpiece fish or not? Doesnt have to be big, just different.

No..not when so much mis-information is being distributed to others....

I can, if you accept you were totally wrong... lol

You need a lot more experience before you state to others what fish need what....completely misleading.
